Bondo, sanding and re-painting is the cure. The hole should never be left opened! what kind of body shop did you go to?

I've never seen it done, but I have read that they have very specialized tools, some of which involve suction, and sometimes they get behind the dent to push it out.
For more information, I'd suggest a search on Google (or "Bing" if you want the newest thing) or visit www.autopia.com and search that forum - it's where the professional detailers go to talk shop and swap hints.

Those dent repair guys really are amazing. A month ago I got the dings taken out of my wife's GS. Had about 7 dings on 4 panels and the guy removed them all for $100 even.
I will always use this guy.
