You'll find that car anywhere from the $16's to the mid $20's. Ultimately, what it's worth is subjective and depends on what someone is willing to pay.
$21,000 is pretty close to the retail book value; $18,500 is the private party value. I usually like to try to offer the average between those and work from there.
Like always, it pretty much comes down to the overall condition of the car. And with a car that old and with that mileage, you have to consider the timing belt factor, too. If it hasn't been done, it needs to be, and that will be anywhere from $800 to $1,500. Consider asking the seller to get it done if you are paying what they are asking.

looking at 2002's in dallas right now as well...
I agree with too cool...
$18-$21k would be the range. From there I would definitely look at maint records, tires and color/miles. Anything over 90k miles should be $15-$18k for that car, and anything less than 60k miles should be on the higher end...like $22k and up. I sold my 2002 with 29k miles a month ago for $24k and it was absolutely perfect with 20" chrome wheels and interior that looked new, but that was a rare car.
The "average" SC 2002 with 60k-80k miles should be around $20k all day long. Look for the best condition, most maint records and best tires/color.
A gold, or navy, or twighlight amethyst pearl or pine colored would be the least expensive. Silver and Black the most. Red can fetch a lot with the right miles and maint, so can white.
I would pay $21k if I knew the 30k, 60k and other recommended services like plugs and timing belt were done already and the tires were new/good.
Start at the top of that range and work your way down...
I am looking at a 2002 with 72k miles in Dallas, red/ecru. It needs two ML 6x9 speakers in the front, the antenna doesn't work (no sound coming from it) and is stuck up, appears to need new pads or rotors turned on the brakes, needs some interior TLC and rear truck shocks. They have partial maint records of a 30k service done but not a 60k or other recommended stuff.
I was able to negotiate $18,962 at a wholesaler in Dallas. I'm not done yet though...I know the car has been sitting for 40 days at the dealer and he is motivated to sell...I hope to get for $18k-$18.5k. The car is really clean...without anything being done to it (no wash, wax, interior shampoo and leather reconditioning) I would give the exterior an 8.5/10 and the interior a 7/10--AS IT IS. When I get done with it, it could be a 9 all the way in/out. That's my goal if I get it. I'm still looking at others.

It's funny how hipocracy works...I have sold about five cars online in my life to people in other states, but I am nervous as hell to buy one! I always like to see the car in person, you know? So...i favor local cars, hence the 2002 red/ecru.
The one bad part about that car other than the little things than need to be addressed is that there is no maint history with Lexus after 7/2007 and 50k miles, and that was two years ago and 20k miles. Did they do the 60k? What else might not we know?
can't get the dealership (wholesaler in Mass) to communicate well. It appears to be a chop shop or something. 2005 with uncertain maint history or car fax and 80k miles PB Edition for $20k.
I found another one on eBay in OH for $27,900 2005 PB with 77k miles with a GREAT history I am looking at as well. Someone else on CL is looking too!

Here's the update. Went to the dealer and they have the car in the prep shop to get the exterior and interior done for the show room. So the manager told me to come back Monday next week to check it out.
So right now I'm still searching for the sc.

I recently purchased an 02 SC430 with 43K miles for $21K. The car is in great shape and everyone thinks it is brand new. One owner and Carfax is clean, Lexus dealer was able to provide me with the car service history from the time it was purchased.
Congratulations on your new purchase.
