19" STERN ST-1 for SC430
#32
Bob-I was a former Mazda lover. I had five Rx-7's and two Mx-6 LS V-6 Coupes. Two 1991 convertibles, 1 1990, 1 1988 and a 1993 (Gen 3) coupe.
Mazda at one time had truly captured the essence of sports cars with ergonomic value, sex appeal and the "fun" factor, but got greedy when they went too plush and too performance driven with the pricey $42k 1993 Gen 3. They were extremely comfortable, fun and sporty cars that people had tremendous pride driving/owning.
Mazda really lost 3-4 notches in the Japanese car world. I remember when they and Mitsubishi actually had Nissan, Honda and Toyota looking over their shoulder at one time. LOL---not even in the same league now. Although the new 6 seems to be doing well and C&D loves the 3. Mazda used to make some beaties...the 929 cruise ship, the Millenia, Mx-6, etc etc.
My fav was my 1988 because even though it only had 145hp, it had a 9k redline! The car actually peaked at like 6700 or something. S2000's tried to do the same thing, but were too rough. I loved my mazda convertibles and they were super rare-still are.
Someday I may buy one and restore it. I replaced 4/5 engines in those cars and would cringe today to see what those prices have escalated to. I'd probably have to convert them to v-8's like a lot of people did and drop the rotary. Your Miata bodystyle is the first bodystyle I actually liked since the first one. The late 90's (gen 2) and gen 3 in early 2000's were terrible. The only thing I wish they would have done is the mazdaspeed engine in your bodystyle with the hardtop. That would have been cool.
My 1994 Mx-6 LS V6 was red on black with a five speed and was a lot of fun. Even though it was front wheel drive and based on the probe gt, it was a nice fun and luxurious comfortable car. What happened? I got bored with it and traded for a SC300.
Oddly enough, I was test driving some boxsters earlier this summer in my quest to find the perfect sports car and I hated the interior, couldn't hear the stereo, etc etc, and casually asked the p-car salesman what he considered to be the one car that he would agree is an equal or better alternative to the boxster---and he said the Miata! I was floored, because the Miata is $20k less and about 150hp less too I believe! wow! What a statement.
My fav miata-the 1993 montego blue M-Edition with tan top, tan leather, momo shift **** and nardi steering wheel bose speakers and BBS wheels-VERY COOL CAR! I remember looking at one thinking, "I can't do a miata" and bought the rx-7.
