Recesses for spacer studs on the stock wheels?
Does the stock "pie" wheels have recessed space to allow for spacer studs?
I.e. so I don't have to shorten the existing wheel studs?
I'm planning on keeping my pie wheels (don't laugh, I actually like them ), ditching the RFT tires and adding spacers instead of wider tires.

I'm not sure what you asking. If I'm correct, you'll have to lengthen the studs, not shorten them to add spacers, but it all depends on how large a spacer you are planning to use. I have a 04 SC with the stock wheels with chrome stars instead of the pie tins (hate'em pie tins that is ), I have 25mm (1") spacer on the back wheels. Haven't gotten around to putting anything on the fronts. Not sure how wide I should go. They are the like the ichiba style 2 that have nuts to bolt onto the hub and then you install the wheel w/your lugs on the spacer. Usually the smaller mm (5, 10 & 15mm I think) widths take the longer studs, maybe not he 5mm you might be able to just install spacers w/out longer studs, not sure, maybe someone on the forum has better first hand knowledge of this. Wider widths take the bolt on way. The wider one are more expensive, cause more labor and parts.
MAKE SURE YOU GET HUB CENTRIC SPACERS.
If you don't it's very tough to get them on true and they will wobble and you won't be a happy camper. I see they usually have some for sale here on the forum. I got mine on e-bay. Nobody had any 25's when I was looking. Good lucky and hope this helps.

I'm thinking about the potential problem with the existing studs that are to be anchored in the spacer will protrude into the wheel itself. See step 2 & 3 below.
As for the ride it should result in a more stable cornering due to the wider stance.
PS. Sorry H&R about the pic but I will buy two sets of spacers from you

The diagram helps make your question make a whole lot more sense!
Even if the stock wheels have that recess, I wonder if the spare does? It would royally suck to get a flat tire and THEN discover that your spare is incompatible!!

What spare? I have no stinkin' spare in the SC. So there isn't a problem. Like I said earlier I have the same spacers as in the picture. Mine are 25mm (1") and the studs stick out a little but because of the recess on the stock wheels there isn't a problem. I guess that is why they don't make the 5mm 10mm and maybe the 15mm in the style in the picture (ichiba style 2) the thinner ones usually require longer studs that have to be installed. As far as ride no difference, handling (my opinion) no difference. Then again I'm not out there tracking it either. So for me it's just for looks.
Don't forget to make sure they are hub concentric like the ones in the photos. I have seen others being offered that don't have it. Good luck on your widening project.
How wide are you going?

I did a write up on different spacers I had used before, but I forgot where it is now.
The recess in 02-05 SC430 wheels is not deep, I believe it is less than 10mm.
If you want to use adapter type spacers without replacing the oem studs, 20mm spacer is the minimum.
A few SC430 members here have the F:25mm/R:30mm setup, but I prefer the F:20mm/R:30mm setup.

A picture says a thousand words
Yep, I want the wider spacers in order to avoid having to replace the studs. That means at least 20 mm (for H&R). So it's good news that the stock wheels have at least a shallow recess.
As for the my setup I think right now that F:20mm/R:30mm would be good based on your feedback and the very deep stock setting of the rear wheels.
I have just parked the car for the winter and I will take of the wheels soon and have the curb damages fixed (not me, that was the previous owner ).
As for tires I'm trying to decide between 245/40 or 265/35. Right now I'm leaning towards 245/40 and max it out on the spacers so to say.
