How do you know when you've successfully reseted the ECU? Is the MPG reset or something?

You can actually feel that the acceleration and shift points are different.

If you reset via unplugging the battery or fuses, you'll be able to tell, because you'll lose your radio presets and (sometimes?) your seat and side mirror memory settings.

Otherwise, there's no visual or audio signal that the ECU has been reset.

3. Press the gas pedal to the floor.

4. Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

5. Wait 2 minutes.

6. Remove key.

7. Done

Yes it works. Done it many times. Works on all years, 2002-2009.

Here is a dmblnd question..

Are you going to flood the engine when pressing the gas pedal in the above senario?

Thanks Roof.

And I don't think so Katy, since the engine isn't on. Only the electrical power is turned on.

I guess I am thinking back to my old VW days, that if you stepped on the gas pedal, and pumped oit, you were going to flood your engine.

I assume then, the car electronics propel the gas, not the accelerator pedal.

Yeah, flooding not an issue - mine starts up with nary a gurgle.

Just so you know, when I mention waiting 2 minutes (in Step #5 above,) originally, I didn't wait at all, and it seemed to work fine. Later on, a Mercedes technician (which is where I learned this trick) told me that waiting 2 minutes produces a more thurough memory wipe. So I do that now, even though I don't really notice a difference. But I'd say the time-wait is not 'mission critical.'

I'll try it.
sounds like an incredible find.

so, in the latter steps, you turn the key to the 'off/lock' position?
then after two minutes, slip the key out.
yes?

just double checking...

Yes jimmer!. Correct.

(Not sure if it says OFF or LOCK, but it's the position in which you normally remove your key.)

thanks, roofless.
I'll give it a try later today.
I've produced a 'reset ECU' doc
for my 430 folder.

btw: only reason there's a exclamation mark after my
name is that jimmer was already taken by someone. go figure.

the verdict is in: WOW!
roofless' ECU reset really works.
he guarantees it, but until you try it, it's hard to believe the difference.
one of the top 10 best tips on this forum.
thank you roofless.

the only problem is that my mpg has dropped to well under 15.
not sure what the problem is, oh, I'm just kidding ;-)

crisp acceleration off the line in standard mode.
in fact, I tested the PWR mode off the line and found
that it lagged, just like the old days.
no lag in the standard mode.
the car actually seems lighter, sportier, more responsive,
with real zip.
it's hard to understand why this reset isn't included in the manual.

this reset process should be apart of each 430 owners trick bag IMHO.

so, doesn't anyone know more about ECU and the software averaging process
that sets the 430's responsiveness?

I doubt anyone but Toyota knows the algorithms used for the learning mode. The ECU code on Toyota's is difficult, if not impossible to crack. I only found 1 company (Modern Horsepower) that seemed to have cracked the code. You had to remove the ECU and send it to them to be reprogrammed. Others have "piggy-backed" the ECU with another chip to get it to perform better. That's a key component that severely limits how effective any mod you do to the engine. Sucks Tranny has an ECU, too.

ECU is more like SUK.
unless I'm missing something.
