Would the snow mode work in the rain? How about driving in 4th instead of D?

I haven't had any troubles driving in rain, but then again I grew up in Houston driving in rainy and flooding conditions.

As a born and raised New Englander, I have driven many cars in VERY snowy conditions. My SC is my daily driver and I have a set of Blizzaks on dedicated wheels that will go on today. It is still a tricky car even with snows. The rear wheel drive is most of the problem. Under most conditions, with some patience, the SC will get me where I want to go. Experience in snowy conditions helps but tires are THE most important ingredient. I see fools in their 4 wheel drive SUVs with lousy tires ditch their vehicles right off the road. I have 5 winters under my belt with a couple of SCs so far so good.
YMMV

Put on 4 snow tires ( Blizzaks bought used from another SC430 owner at a great price) recently and purposely drove around in the first major snow of the season a few days ago. The Blizzaks did fine. Apart from a little slipping, the Blizzaks bit through about 1.5 or 2 inches of accumulation without trouble. Didn't dare go too fast obviously but 40 mph on local roads was just fine. And the great thing is, because these Blizzaks are not RFT's they ride better than my Pirelli all season P Zero Nero RFTs.

Well us folks up in Canada do just fine in the winter, (although I hate it with a passion!) We just park our His & Her's SC's for the winter and drive "Winter Beaters" so as not to put our baby's through the torture of the white sh*#t. At times like this I wish I was down south in a warmer climate, we just went through our first blizzard of the year this past weekend, -32 deg, blowing snow and got almost 2 feet of the white horror!! I would rather be in Arizona!!

even with all seasons, with a slight incline plus snow combo there is a lot of difficulty.

Now that I have summer tires, Lexy stays parked in the garage till it warms up in a couple months here.

Snow tires is a must on this car. As previously mentioned more than a dusting and you are int trouble. I had slightly better traction on 20" tires than I did on the stock tires Pretty scary experience.

snow tires or a move to the southwest.
I picked the latter.
