Default Acceleration issues?

Has anyone experienced any of the abnormal acceleration issues plaguing the Toyotas right now? (I haven't.)

I haven't either. Our vehicles likely won't be affected by the pedal issue.

One of the Lexus models have had reports of it. I can't remember which one but I think it was the ES.

I suspect that the "pedal" problems are not a mechanical problem, at least not all of them. There are too many folks talking about the car just deciding to start accelerating by itself. This is likely to be a drive-by-wire problem, potentially related to the cruise control.

From Toyota's claims, it sounds like they do have a mechanical issue with the pedals, but that issue does not match the problems that have resulted in several deaths and extremely scary moments from those that managed to get the car under control.

It was a Lexus ES350, part of the loaner fleet, from a dealer in El Cajon, CA, a suburb of San Diego. This particular vehicle probably was a case of accelerator entrapment with the floor mats rather than a problem with the electronics or mechanical problems. Issues have been raised about two sets of floor mats in the car, both the carpeted ones and heavy duty all weather mats.

The incident drew nationwide attention to the issue of unintended acceleration due to the four fatalities which shocked the entire community. An entire family died in the crash. The driver was a sworn police officer who worked for the Cal Hwy Patrol. Litigation is ongoing. A very sad and tragic incident.

This link give a brief explanation of the issue and mentions the ES 350.

Actually my wife had an 07 ES 350 that had a "surge" problem which was traced back to the new 6 speed tranny. It was replaced under warranty 3 months into ownership. Seems like she can't buy a break traded the Lexus for a '10 Prius although there haven't been any issues so far.
Waiting for the recall.

Sounds a little like my situation too. I was buying a vehicle to replace my 94 LS400 because of engine problems. I didn't feel "safe" driving it. I just bought a 2008 Toyota Avalon about a month ago...then BOOM! Recall...

I have a 2007 ES350. There is a recall to modify the accelerator pedal. I had it done the other day. Can't notice anything different. I've never had a problem with the car. It has been bullet proof so far, after 3.5 years and 28,000 miles.

I understand this is the SC forum... but I did some checking on the recall campaign for the ES350 models and found the document linked below.

While the SC are not officially affected and the engineering is different, I personally believe having the knowledge about issues like this is important to understand. So if you care to, the campaign document is here for you to read.

The original document was issued in Dec 2009 but revisions have been made to it as late as a couple of days ago (Feb 3rd). It's 31 pages and contains a thorough explanation of the problem and other models that may be affected.

I also posted this document in the ES350 forum in an appropriate thread there.

The es350 driver was probably panicking since he was in an unfamiliar car. They called 911 as if theyre in the movie speed to tell them they cant slow down, yet didnt think to shift the car into neutral.

Drivers education.... when your cars outa control you SHIFT TO NEUTRAL. But no one pays attention in school anyways.

2010 Prius is probably fine -- cars manufactured after January 2009 had the ABS fix done on the assembly line. Check your date of manufacture.

Apparently it is the ES & IS, as mentioned in MoneyCNN.com
http://money.cnn.com/2010/02/05/autos/toyota_advice/

Regarding floor mats:
"Is it being blamed for crashes? Yes, there have been crashes and some deaths on account of this problem.

What cars are involved? 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Venza, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe (a version of the Matrix), 2007-2010 Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2004-2009 Prius, 2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2007-2010 Lexus ES350, 2006-2010 IS250 and the 2006-2010 IS350."

Braking issues:
"Toyota is also investigating whether the Lexus HS250h hybrid, which shares its mechanical parts with the Toyota Prius, might have a similar problem."

What cars are involved? 2010 model year Toyota Priuses made before January, 2010.
