Those with custom exhaust...
Hello,
I found through searching that many of you are running straight pipes from the axle back..basically just removing the muffler bolt on part and running new tubes to the back...
My questions for those who have done this is, have you lost low end torque bacause of this?
I had a GS400 before and tried running straigh pipes and the car felt like crap off the line, lost low end torque which I wasnt happy about.
How does the car feel accelerating from the stop? THanks!

I didn't notice any torque difference. I reset the CPU immediately after the mod though. The car will still have glass pack mufflers and cats. It will also still pass the smog test.
Great mod for a great price....

He asked about removing the muffler behind the rear axle. A mod common to SC430s. His concern was because he had a car in the past with straight pipes (no mufflers/ and cats?) lost torque.
I explained that the SC430 has additional mufflers and cats (in front of the rear axle) which can help with back pressure.
This mod does not have a noticeable torque decrease.

back pressure being a requirement is nothing more than a myth.
its all about flow vs. velocity.
the 1uz/3uz for example, if you run a 3" straight pipe w/o mufflers or cats, you'll feel a massive power loss due to the loss of effective scavenging due to the pipe size (this is dictated primarily by the headers), whereas if you ran a 2.25-2.5" straight pipe w/o mufflers or cats you would feel an INCREASE in power/tq across the range since you wouldnt lose the scavenging effect and would increase the flow AND velocity.
but i digress...no op, you shouldnt notice any loss of power whatsoever removing the last pair of mufflers on your car.

Great Thread,
This would be one of the very few mods that I would want to do.
My question is; do you guys think the sound level would still be legal
in all states? My wife and I may want to take a very long trip and would be in
NYC and DC and do not want any problems with the men in blue.
I have heard a you tube clip of AQUANUKE's SC in which I think he did
this mod and it sounds nice. I do think he also added resonator tips to
mellow out the sound so it is a little less raspy.
The other question is; do most local muffler shops work in Stainless pipe?
I really would like the modded pipes to be in stainless if possible.
Thanks For Any Replys,
Brian

Glock,
Had this mod done to my SC... could only take it for a few days (not my style)... and I'm in my mid 20's. Sound is not too loud (think stock GTO) - I seriously doubt that you will raise any more attention from the men in blue.
All in all the sound was sexy - When starting in a parking lot/gas station people would look up like wtf is that a lexus?
It did sound very nice (once warmed up), however, it was a bit too American/mustang/gto ish for my liking... there's a reason I bought my Lexus :-)
