best yr to purchase used? 02-04 vs 05 vs 06?

Yes, it does.
06+, I think.
When they changed it from a 5-speed trans to the 6-speed trans
The shifter gate was changed from that oddly-shaped J to an "H"...where you can flick the gear lever to the left (and it stays) and then you momentarily press it forward or back ("+" or "-") to go through the gears.
06+, I think.

Going from an IS300 to an 02' SC430, electronic shifting is one of the things I miss.
I like downshifting when having to take a tight turn at high speeds. One day I'll sell my 02 and buy an 06.

Looks pretty nice. From time to time I wondered if the newer 6 speed was an elecronic shifter and tried to find photos of the stearing wheel to see if it had the controls in there. Manu-matic, Techtronics, or whatever it is called.
One thing that i don't like about them is..they can't really tell an exciting story the way a true manual transmission does! In movies where there is a car chase, it doesn't have the same thrill or excitement when they zoom in on the driver pushing a tiny button to shift (it's like slamming the phone on someone you hate, but with cell phone), like I think they did in the movie Transporter 2. Not quite the same as seeing a zoom in of Don Johnson's Ferarri shifting with his hands and quickly zooming in to see him push in the clutch wearing his white Berluti shoes and sockless feet - ha ha!
