if it’s a different size and you put it on the rear will it not stress that differential?

The differential allows the two output shafts to turn at different speeds. That is why it is there.

Assuming the bolt pattern is correct, it is important for the overall outer diameter (OD) to match your original tires. Yes, differentials compensate for the wheels turning at different speeds, but, are only designed to do do while turning. To do so continually could overheat the diff and possibly do harm. My guess is it would require a substantial difference in tire size, and running at freeway speeds for relatively long distances for damage to occur, but, why risk it when correct diameter spares are available?
