Default Opinions on SC 430 shopping...

Fellas (and ladies),

I have been driving a 1994 SC 400 for the last two years and have very much enjoyed the experience. It is very clean and in great working order and has 126k mikes. But my eye has begun to wander.

I have been seeing 430s everywhere, like they are following me. I love the styling and the way these darlings look with the bonnet off. The look damn fine with the top up too.

I have a few dollars to spend and have found a Lexus certified 2005 Pebble Beach (black on red) with 50K miles that I was quoted 32,500. They claim this is their rock bottom price. I am not sure that is true but for the moment I will take them at thier word.

Is this a deal worth taking?

Help!!

I just bought an 06 with 12,500 miles for 34,700 but it was not certified. I paid 1200 for a bumper to bumper, 0 deductible warranty from my credit union. You can compare this to your offer and decide what you think. I don't want to think that hard again after just going through this 6 weeks ago.

I can't blame you for not wanting to go thru that again. Sounds like you got a very nice deal!!

Personally, I don't think the certified preowned is worth it. The SC is so well built and reliable, I'd just check the service history or any car you're looking at and make sure it hasn't been in a major crash. Then get an extended warranty. The Pebble Beach carries a bit of a premium. If your heart is set on that color combo, it may be worth it to you. But 2005s with that milage are going for mid to high 20s.

Never become emotionally attached to car you don't own. Do some due diligence, then decide.

Two of us on CL recently bought a 2005 Pebble Beach and that is a little high. Liquid SC is right-you do pay a little premium for the Pebble Beach.

Personally I think the CPO is absolutely worth it, but you can use it to your advantage to negotiate. You can certainly tell them you don't want the CPO and see what discount they give you and then go buy a Platinum warranty.

I can tell you that I've owned my 2005 CPO with 35k miles on it for ten months and I have already paid for the CPO cost two-to-three times! Do a search, we have debated this topic immensely on this forum! Unfortunately when you back out the CPO cost they only back out THEIR COST ($900 or so) and not their marked up cost, which is somewhere between $2500-$3k.

I've had two extended warranties (Lexus CPO and Lexus Platinum Warranty) and in my experiences have more than recouped my money back for the cost of the warranty. On this current car, which is only ten months old, I bet that I triple the cost I paid for the CPO. On my 2002 with 25k miles, I paid $1800 for the 3year 75k mile plan (Platinum) and I bet I had $6k in receipts over the course of ownership covered under warranty.

$3k goes quick on this car...error 5 code on the ML stereo...$1200 for head unit.... a couple of ML speakers or a sub and a speaker could run $1k-$2k. Motor mounts, transmission mounts can be thousands. I agree with Liquid SC that these cars are tremendously dependable, however all it takes is one or two things to go wrong and the warranty more than pays for itself.

Here are some links from last year on PB pricing:

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...aint-done.html

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...deal-good.html

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...k-for-29k.html

Motor Mounts: $1800

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...or-mounts.html

Transmission Mounts and Intake Manifold: ~$3000

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...ing-sound.html

Total warranty dollars in ten months on a 35k mileage 2005 CPO: $4800

CPO "cost" to back out of deal when I bought it: $900

You do the math! Hope this helps.

For that vintage, I think the CPO is well worth it. You can almost guarantee that the tire sensor batteries are going to fail in the next year or two. They're lilke ~$300ish a swing, installed and programmed.

Those plus any other minor thing...like an oxygen sensor...and you got your money's worth.

i think a good extended warranty is definitely worth getting. i just don't see how a lexus warranty is worth $1000 more than one through a reputable third party that provides the exact same coverage. credit unions are usually a great resource for them, btw.

I just paid 37,800 for a 2007 Pebble Beach Ed. with 22K. You might want to shop around a little more. I found this site to be helpful: cargurus.com

I just bought a PB Edition SC430 Black/Pimento Red from Newport Lexus in Orange Cty, CA. (2005/49,943 miles/CPO/No Sales Tax/1 Owner) Waiting for it to ship-8.25.10. With only 400 made (last number I was told, but heard 200 at a Lexus event, maybe 200 Neiman Marcus Editions) PB's are at a premium, especially since Lexus is done producing the SC. So you might have to pay a little more to get that limited edition vehicle. Collectors are out there looking, as that is who told me about the one I purchased from Newport Lexus. $32,500-WOW they went up in pricing since my quote 2wks ago.
