Speakers
Need to replace bass speakers in door panels of 2002 SC430. Dealer wants $1,000. Any suggestions for alternative solutions. Desire good quality, but do not need to be top of the line.

Here is the link to thread that has all the steps:

Now you have to decide if you want OEM replacement, or repairs or other speakers... and there are all sorts of threads on that too.

yes
both cpo and ESPs cover them. I have had both plans and had speakers replaced under both. CPO and Platinum are similar but not the same. Gold is more restrictive and may not...the X is not there under stereo components so the Platinum is the only one that covers under the ESPs.

I replaced 2 (driver's door and rear woofer) of mine about 2 months ago. I brought the replacements from Sewell for about $500. I then read on CL that you could get your speakers refoamed at Simply Speakers down in Fla. So I sent my originals to be refoamed for $45 apiece. You're welcome to buy the door speaker (or both) if you're interested.

I don't think its worth replacing the OEM speakers, I got a year old pair 6x9 from a friend but rather go with aftermarket anyways. You'll get way better sound quality. Does anyone know if 5 1/4" speaker will fit in the rear? Thx.

The big issue which nobody seems to address is the fact that they are 8 ohm speakers and are actually a home system. Regular car ones are 4 ohm. Crutchfild is no help hereThe difference will damage the amp over time. What are the model of speakers that you used as a replacement. This speker issue is the one thing I don't like about the car. I too don't want to spend $500 but otherwise you will damge the amp

Sources that sell bare drivers for home systems will have units that you should be able to sub for the ML units since most home units are 8 ohms. There are several posts on this forum that give a lot of detail, including the size and impedance of all the ML speakers. If you use an adapter plate to get from the 6 x 9 opening you should be able to use a 6-1/2" round unit that's no more than 3" deep. Auction sites have these available. All this said there is no way you will know the replacement speaker is going to sound right with the existing door speakers until you have done all the work. Drivers vary in efficiency so you may see volume differences between new units and OEM. I would just read everything you can find on CL and try to make informed decisions about the best way to go. Any choice you make shouldn't cost you as much as buying new ML units.
