Door Speakers

I have had my SC for 6 months and found it as great as everybody says it is. Howerver the door speakers buzz and I want to replace them. They are an odd size and are 8 ohm vs. 4 ohm of usual speakers. Nobody makes an afteremarket direct replacement and it seems the 4 ohm speaker will eventually damage the amp. So it seems I have to go with the ML replacement speakers. It seems a lot of people have replaced them with upgraded round speakers with ring but what about finding an 8 ohm speaker. What were the specific model that you used. I hate to spend $375+100 for an 8 year old (new) speaker. Thanks

As you know there a many threads on this subject. Here is one company that makes a 6x9 in both 4 and 8 ohms. http://dcgold.com/products/classic-line/n69c/. Besides the impedance issue there is one other item to know, form factor depth. If your replacement speaker is too deep it will interfere with the window operation.

Another path to consider is having the speaker re-foamed. I only spent about $40 and they sound great. Here is some info http://www.decware.com/newsite/refoam.htm. I've used a service like this in California, http://www.speakerrepair.com/ maybe someone knows one closer to you.

I bought my re-foaming kits from them and found their service and selection advice to be very good. Of course if you prefer not to do the work they will repair your speakers for you. As I recall the kit for two speakers is about $24 delivered and if they do the work it's about $40 each. That should tell you something about how difficult it is.

I had my original subwoofer and 1 door speaker refoamed (after I purchased 2 new ones from Sewell) at Simply speakers. They're still in the box, I live in DC so I'm close to you. send me a message if you would like to buy the door speaker.

I used speaker glue on both of mine. They have lasted about 9 months so far without issues (who knows how long they'll last... could be forever, could be 1 year). The speaker glue was purchased from partsexpress.com (just a couple bucks).

Couple of observations: The DC Gold units are probably very good but they're full-range speakers while the ML 6 x 9s aren't - so in a sense you're buying more speaker than is needed, and the frequency balance probably won't be the same as OEM (good or otherwise). They're also quite a bit more expensive than repairing the ML speakers, which will yield original sound. Some of what you're paying for with the DC Gold speakers is weather resistance and more power handling capacity.

IMO i tested out the DC gold speaker.. and it's a great product. BUT it does NOT sound as good as the factory 6x9 with the Factory amp. the DC speaker is more powerful so, having this hooked up to your factory ML amp, you won't get the full effect of what this speaker is capable of. i recommend running a seperate amp to run these speakers and that's what i'm doing. I turned the bass up to +5 with the DC golds and they hit as hard as the factory 6X9 at level +2. so IMO to get the best use of this speaker is hooking it to an aftermarket amp.

Agree, I just used clear silicon on my woofer speaker and the stereo system actually sounds better than before. I only fixed the driver side where I had vibration. The original instructions here linked https://www.clublexus.com/forums/lex...all-sc430.html are great & thanks Zgone!
I noticed a couple years ago, even before the vibration it didn't sound as good when I bought my car in 2001 spring. It stated vibrating this summer. i only have about 30k miles on my 2002 SC430.
I attached a picture of mine before I put the ring back on of mine. I hope it comes through. I felt I did a poor job squeezing out the silicon, very sloppy and thought it may not work... but it worked great.
I would just fix the 6X9 speaker because these are actually very good and sound incredible in this Mark Levinson system.

Couldn agree more withyou guys on fixing them. Imo theres just too much hassle in swapping speakers. I think the factory system is great as is. Only thing i would do is replace the rear sub for a bit more boom. I fixed my factory speakers but messed one up taking it apart to try on my 6.5 boss speaker i bought. Thats the only reason why i bought the dc gold speakers. Instead of spending 200 on one factory speaker ill buy a pair from dc which are excellent when combined with an aftermarket amp to get the full use of it. But like i said, theres nothong wrong with fixing the factory 6x9 because they sound great and work great with your factory amp.
