Default Function of permanently attached air filter on the engine intake box cover?

It is possible that no one knows the answer to this, but it doesn't hurt to ask, someone might know.

I am curious of it's function, no other Lexus that we owns have this extra air filter permanently attached to the air box cover. It is not a normal filter either, it looks very special.

So it is not designed to be replaceable, I can only come up with 2 possible functions that it serve.

Extra dirt filteration or intake sounds dampening.

I am guessing is extra sounds dampening because it is a convertible?

Are we talking about the intake resonator here? It's not a filter but rather a device that both lowers intake noise and actually increases intake flow for increased horsepower.

Default Air cleaner area components

My SC is a little older than yours but should be very similar. The only components in the air filter area are shown in the attachment. Inside the air cleaner box is a paper filter element. Can you clarify what you're referring to?

It is some kind of filter, it is not shown in any of the diagram. It sit directly on top of the regular paper filter and it is permanently attached to the air box cover.

Since it is permanently attached to the air box cover, I am sure it comes with the air box cover when you buy one, it is weird.

I had all that air intake stuff apart when I replaced my timing belt last spring and I don't recall any type of secondary filter, etc. as you describe. Since mine is older it's possible that Lexus made a design change at some point. Maybe another member can help identify what else is in the air filter box on a 2006 SC besides the air filter element.

Thank you for your input

It is interesting to know the older cars don't have this filter, since the engine suppose to be identical

No worries. Actually I was looking the car over this AM and just for fun decided to re-check just to be sure. There was nothing but the paper element in my air cleaner box. It would be interesting to know what you've got there.

I'll go take a pic of it when I have a chance, it is a very funky looking filter.

And it is an OEM part that belongs there since it fit perfectly, so is not like someone put it there by accident.

No update, kinda lost interest.

Will check to see if my LS have the same deal in there and will take a pic of that piece that I ripped out of the SC.

I finally looked inside of my LS430's airbox, it is empty, no extra filter element like my SC430.
