Default warranty for 2006 SC 430

My 2006 SC 430 has under 19,000 miles and is out of warranty. I'm considering the 5 yr warranty quoted below by my dealer, JM Lexus. What do you think? Should I consider a non-Lexus warranty?

These Warranties are all JM&A Platinum with zero deductible. The best of the best!!!

3yr or 36K miles $1,827
4yr or 48k miles $2,407
5yr or 60k miles $2,722

I have a 2006 SC430 with ~23,000 miles and I'm not considering a warranty. It's all about your individual risk profile, not at all saying what I am doing is correct, but this is a highly reliable vehicle. Based on the warranties above, the three year is about $609/yr and the five year about $544/yr. If you think you are going to spend more than that in essential repairs then these make sense. Conversely, if you have just have one year without an essential repair, that would give you over $1,000 to spend should something go wrong or give you enough money to replace your timing belt and water pump. Again, it's a personal decision, this is simply regurgitated information to play with.

From the Lexus website it looks like the list price of a 0-deductable 5-year 60K Platinum warranty for an SC430 is $1450. You can probably do even better than that by getting quotes from some other Lexus / Toyota dealers. I'd be very careful with a dealer-specific warranty product.

If you have access to a credit union, you might want to check for a third party warranty. I belong to a teachers credit union and was able to get a 7 year/75,000 mile warranty (zero deductable) on my 02 SC430 in 2008. My SC had 24K miles on it when I bought it in 2008 for $1230 (the warranty, that is). It now has 31K miles on it and the warranty company has paid about $2800 on it so far. That includes the stereo system, 2 speakers, subwoofer, and some small engine repairs. Repairs are always done at the Lexus dealer and I've never had a problem using it. Its still good until 2015! The low price was directly related to the low milage. I've run prices for other vehicles with higher milage and they are either much higher or will not warranty at all. I consider my deal is about as good as it gets. I thought the price I paid in 08 for my 02 ($27K) was a fair price given the milage and condition. I was also given the opportunity to take the car to Lexus for a pre-sale inspection and computer report for $160. The selling dealer was an exotics dealer. No regrets here.

Just got this bid this week from Sewell Lexus in Dallas...so I'd say you are getting a pretty good deal.

We have exhausted this conversation many times (please do a search, you will find a ton of conversations on it), but all I can say simply is: BUY the warranty-you will not regret it! Replacing 2-3 ML speakers ($600-$800 each with install, subwoofer much more) will more than pay for the investment and you can bet they will go out some time or another.

Lexus Platinum Vehicle Service Agreement

$0 deductible

(time or miles, whichever comes first)

1 year or 12,000 miles: $1475

2 years or 24,000 miles: $1675

3 years or 36,000 miles: $2000

4 years or 50,000 miles: $2800

5 years or 60,000 miles: $3275

I have seen numerous posts on this great forum regarding the problems/replacement of the ML door speakers - Did Lexus ever do anything to remedy the speaker problem, or did they just blindly keep putting these (what appears to be extremely fragile) speakers in the vehicles for 9 years, and keep replacing them under warranty for the entire run of the SC430

Brickfl Check out this thread in the ES350 Section (Current Zero Deductible Platinum Extended Warranty Prices as of June 30) It is the last thread on the first page. I talked to Jerry Johnson at the Toyota superstore in Kansas last week, if I was going to get a warranty it would be from him. If your car was new when you got it then he can help you, if it was used when you bought he can't, give him a call or e-mail him.

Today I headed over to Sewell and got my extended warranty. Came out with an 8 year/100k warranty.

They also threw in some Bob Steakhouse gift certificates and goodies

Looks like the car and I are hitch for at least till 2017.
