Default It works

I just replaced my gen 3 drive with a gen 4 drive and If anybody is interested it does work and is a direct replacement, all 3 connections fit. everything works as it should.

Interesting. Did you replace only the trunk-mounted hardware and retain the gen 2/3 NAV disc? If I am not mistaken, a gen 4 disc is dual layer but the DL drive would probably read a single layer DVD so that makes sense. But I assume that since the "intelligence" is in the display unit that would probably have to be changed out to use a gen 4 disc, right? I am betting the pinouts are probably the same for the head units also but haven't checked wiring diagrams to verify.

No, I used the gen 4 disk that came with the gen 4 drive. It is much better than the gen 3. The maps are better and there is alot more POI and more.

Interestingly the Data 2000 ver. 1 disc (first SC data disc ever) that came in my '02 SC is single layer, and I'm pretty certain that the gen 2/3 ver. 9.1 disc ( p/n PT219-GEN23-09) that I bought last year for that vehicle was a 4.77MB disc also. I find it a bit strange that they would only utilize half the capacity for data if the hardware could support it. The ver. 9.1 Gen 2/3 doesn't have nearly the POI capacity as, say, the 7.1 Gen 4 disc so I was practically certain it was single layer.

im goin to do this, I did in it my 02 RX300...considering swapping the double din unit for one off a 2005 or higher...my assumption is that at that point I would be able to add ipod integration via the sat. radio option. I dont think the monitor would need to be changed....anybody agree/disagree? Jhaffey was swapping the computer in the back easy?

havent started yet, wish i would have swapped it out before i traded in the RX...as it stands now im waiting for a reasonable 4th gen drive on ebay they are in the 700 range. I would prefer to wait I was wondering did the 2010 come with gen 5 or gen 6, I know my IS250 does not have a drive the nav disc is loaded into the unit in the front of the car like a CD, copied and then ejected. If it did have a rear drive though maybe its plug and play. I know for sure the Gen 4 is.

if its hdd then it shouldnt be plug and play the wiring would have to be changed/adapted. The only person i know that can do stuff like that is egusman/lexusaudio...i emailed him, we will see what he says.

Gen4 though is easy enough both switching the drive in the back and the double din unit up front. The drive will run 700-800 havent found a used double din though. its probably an arm and a leg from lexus.
