Default V Belt Rib Replacement DIY SC430

Talwang has done a DIY on this serpentine belt replacement, thanks to him. I did this today and wanted a bit more step by step.

This is a fairly simple DIY. The tensioner allows you to remove the old belt easily. Installing the new belt is done with a technique mentioned on the TSB ( as posted also):

1st step to remove the air intake cowl to get to the tensioner:

2nd step: Remove cowl and get your 14 mm socket wrench.

Get the wrench and turn it counterclockwise and it will loosen the belt and remove.

Here's the TSB, follow the instructions on how to install the belt. Quite easy.

Finally belt is on and check if installation is correct per TSB. The marker must fall within the B range. This means the belt is the right size.

The old worn out belt I had was out of range, means that the old belt has become longer due to use.

The Lexus belt was $72 at the dealer. $38 if we buy from Sewell with the discount.

Since I needed one bad ver quickly, I just used an aftermarket. This Gates belt cost me $40 at OReilly's. Belt looks and works good. Just make sure the belt is the right OEM replacement. If you will get this Gates Micro V belt, it is part # K060888. The Lexus belt # is: 90916-02584 V-belt rib.

Also while the belt is out, check your 2 idlers and the tensioner. Spin them and try to listen if you can hear noise coming from the bearing or if they are loose. If they show symptoms of noise and wiggle, time to replace them. Mine was ok for now. Will watch out. Also simple DIY for replacing these.

Very nice! Excellent write up and nice pics with labels.

I used the Gatorback based on others suggestions on both of my SC's. About the same price if I remember correctly.

This is a GREAT money saver and fairly straightforward DIY project. IMO installing metal pedals were harder LOL.

Thanks for doing this. We should make this a sticky too...or add it to a larger sticky called "Routine Maintenance". I added this to the common issues section of the Buyer's Guide Sticky. It is very common and very possible that someone shopping for a SC will run into this sooner or later.

Thanks Derek.

My next one will be how to replace the hood molding (chrome strip on top of radiator grille. Mine was so beat up it was nasty and had a broken snap. Since people hold this chrome plate all the time opening and shutting down the hood, the snaps tend to break.

I ordered a replacement from Sewell plus some other mouldings I was missing. was going to replace the grille, too but will cost $150. Too much for little return.

Will take pics when I replace them.

My hood chrome piece is new and it looks like a champ! $60. My old one has a lot of tiny stone marks.

Fairly simple but as requested I will post what I have. The piece is $60 at Sewell. Brand spanking shiny.

Just a follow up. When you install the new belt, the marker will fall within the B range as in the TSB. Look at the TSB carefully. Looks like the B range is between the 2nd and 3rd notch.

This attachment should show the "B" range and the indicator mark more clearly. Hope this helps.
