It's just to "cute" for me. I wanted something bigger (not implying interior usable space).
I was originally looking at the CLK430, which is a closer match. But in 2000, deep into its 2nd year, the dealers didn't even have one for me to test drive, and the waiting list was 18 months. In general, I've never been impressed with Mercedes' integrity, nor their intentional unavailability and pricing over MSRP (at least until recently).
Lastly, I've never been impressed with the excessive number of buttons on all the Mercs. The layouts of the Lexus are elegant and very easy to use (the only other nav system that comes close is Acura's).

I had an SLK prior to my Sc430. I found it more sporting and tossable with better utilization of trunk space but no space behind the seats. In Europe the SLK is considered one of the best built Mercedes. I like both of them but my wife much prefers the SC.

Comparing an SLK to a SC430 is hillarious. I guess it is what you were looking at. The SC430 is better than the SLK in every single category I can think of, except for the AMG version.
The CLK430 is different on the otherhand. It's a better match, and lacks a lot of things that the SC430 has. But both the CLK and the SC looks great and perform great.
It's not that hard to use. You get the feel of it. Plus the pictures are pretty self-explanatory.
Sheesh. Seems like the SC430 when it first came out.
