'02 door speaker replacement redux
Thanks to mandyfig and zgone for their excellent tutorials. Today, I changed out the woofers in the doors of my FIL's '02... The speaker cones had separated from the foam, of course, and were buzzing like a hive of Africanized bees.
After following the tutorials mentioned above (mandyfig's pasted here https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc-...nks-zgone.html ), I removed the speaker assembly from the car and separated the speaker from the plastic frame. I removed the two tabs on the speaker frame, so a 6x9 to 5-1/4 adapter would fit flush on the frame (Scosche SA69- http://www.scosche.com/car-audio/product/1177). I then cut the opening in the adapter to accept a 6-1/2 round woofer in the adapter (obtained from: http://www.simplyspeakers.com/replac...er-w-6028.html from a gent who was most helpful, and 2 days shiptime from Fl to Al...). These 8-ohm poly-mica woofers were monsters, compared to the ML 6x9 wimps removed. I then drilled the adapter to accept the new 6-1/2 , and test-fit everything. The new speakers were 3.25 deep, but only 3" deep from the bottom of the mounting flange. The adapter was approx 1/8" thick, so the speaker effective depth was 2-7/8, which cleared the window mechanism perfectly.
I then cut the wires from the ML speakers, and soldered them onto the new ones, to keep the install plug-and-play. I placed double-stick, foam tape (auto molding tape) to the lexus frame between the frame and adapter, and also on the speaker rim, between the speaker and adapter. Screwed everything together and buttoned everything up.
Sound is deep and as loud as you can stand, without distortion... All in all, a nice install.
Sorry, no pics...
