A buddy has a 2002 SC430 with around 130k miles on it now.
The car sat for the last few months getting some bodywork done, and came out with a dead battery. He replaced the battery and the car is exhibiting some strange warning lights and driveability issues which it did not have before being parked for few months:
- the check engine light is coming on steady at highway speeds, and then starts blinking at speeds less than around 30-40mph.
- the car runs smooth at higher rpm and on the highway and starts fine, but the idle is rough at stoplights, etc around town
- the "VSC" and "VSC OFF" lights are occasionally coming on
- he had a local shop reset the codes and the only code pulled was "P1354" which is some kind ignition misfire?

A 1354 error is VVT system malfuction, i.e. valve timings which accounts for the idle issues. The FSM also says the OCV, oil control valve could have some foreign materials causing a blockage. The valve supplies oil to the advance or retard side of the VVT controller. The four trouble areas tied to the trouble code are: valve timings, OCV, VVT Controller, or the ECM (engine control module).

Cylinder two misfires. That's what causing the blinking MIL on the dash. Goes back to valve timings. Cylinder #2 is the first one on the right side (passenger) bank as you're facing the car.
This is from the FSM: "The ECM uses th crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor to monitor changes in thee crankshaft rotation for each cylinder. The ECM counts the number of times the engine speed change rate indicates that a misfire has occurred. When the misfire rate equals or exceeds the count indicating that the engine condition has deteriorated, the check engine waring light lights up. If the misfire rate is high enough and the driving conditions will cause catalyst overheating, the check engine warning light blinks when misfiring occurs."
