Default Rear Camera Thought... Inputs?

So we were driving today and my girlfriend asked me.. "how cool would it be for the backup camera to come on when we turn on the blinkers"..

so my question is.. "is the navtool just looking for a constant 12v power signal to switch over to the camera?" I wonder if I can tap wires in to the signal power and connect it to the wire that switches the camera in to the mode when you are in reverse.

The nav tool gives you two inputs, one is for the reverse camera that will only get triggered in reverse, and the other is a constant for a dvd player or similar item. I purchase a 1 to 2 splitter and hooked up both the inputs to my reverse camera, so now not only does the camera work when I reverse the car but with a flick of a switch I have the image come on the screen permanently.

I like the idea!

Connecting a retriggerable one-shot circuit to the blinker relay would do it. The timeout for the one-shot circuit should be adjusted to just exceed the blinker rate. This will keep the backup camera on continuously and will turn it off automatically after the blinker is turned off. To keep everything in the trunk you can pick up both the left and right turn signal lamp wires and feed them into an OR gate (or relay with diodes) to trigger the one-shot.

Maybe on some cold, rainy day . . .

Okay, even simpler (but not cheaper): A Parallax Basic Stamp micro, $35, and a tiny bit of BASIC programming, free. It runs on car voltage and will easily activate the NavTool switch for the backup camera. You'll still need to grab a connection from both right and left turn signals for automatic activation.

Okay, alright, give me some time and I'll gin up a circuit, install it and report back. If it works I'll be glad to share the details and maybe knock out some for anyone that's interested. As you can tell, I think your girlfriend had a great idea.

Robert, no problem, you don't need to use the second function for this. You can use the reverse input connection to the NavTool to do the job. Your second function will still be available to do what you want.

This sounds cool. I just received my NavTool yesterday and waiting for the camera to come tomorrow. Activation by signal lights would be unique when changing lanes to see blind spots.
