The problem is during emergency it is not that easy to pop into D. In panic you probably pop in other gears that you don't intend. LOL. Without engine power you can change direction but the momentum drops immediately. Learn some physics.
Also, even you pop in D it will take a little while to engage. Hope you know human reaction time is at least 0.2 sec and the mechanics take more time to engage.

With that argument, manual transmissions would have died a in the forties as the difference in death rates from automatic transmission drivers compared to Panicky manual transmission drivers unable to pick the right gear....and as 4 ,5 ,and 6 speed manuals appeared the Panicky death rate would have skyrocketed as they unable to choose a gear rampaged out of control.
Changing gears in the automatic (pushing a lever up or down) compared to pushing a clutch and moving a big floor mounted lever thru a dogleg path to the correct gear position would have guaranteed outlawing manual transmissions if their had been a significant problem with maintaining control in an emergency.
I have driven FF, Lotus Elan, Tiger,Lola,GTO automatic, and 50 other cars since the 60's.....
Your argument is not based on my expierience nor on the real world.
