Default List of things to do to improve the mileage (miles/gallon)

My 02 SC 430 (46k miles) is now very low on the mileage (about 12 miles/gallon). I do not feel anything strange or different driving around. I will visit the mechanic for diagnosis but I like to know if anyone here had similar situation and list of things to inspect/verify step by step to resolve it.

Check the O2 sensors. Do you have any check engine lights?

Check air filter, spark plugs and cables, and of course tire pressure and conditiom perhaps before a dealer check.

that's really low......I got 15.7mpg with 99% city driving. I got an increase of 0.8mpg with new K&N air filter & spark plug.

Do you push it alot??? I can't seem to see such a big different.

Try to calculate MPG yourself and not by the computer.

1. fill-up your tank, reset trip- odometer
2. drive few day or about 100miles
3. fill-up your tank again, calculate it mileage/gallon will tell you the real MPG

Just my experience, my owner calculation based on full tank refills is 0.5 mpg lower that the onboard computer mpg.

Improving driving habits is the greatest hyper miler action. Change how you accel. Coast downhills, time street lights, keep your tires inflated properly etc etc. Service your vehicle as advised and you should be back up to snuff w/ oem advertisement.

Thanks for all your responses.

I always had 20" Enkei wheels, average has been 16/18 miles for the last 9/10 years, until recently I had 42/43 tire pressure, (strangely: drove quieter, smoother and softer!) recently I lowered the tire pressure to 35 probably that is the factor for such a low mileage! 46K miles and still have original brakes.... I drive sports car like a luxury car.........I am thinking of going back to higher tire pressure.

Wow...42 psi seems high. I run mine at 37 psi and constantly get around 26.5-28.5mph on hwy. Never tried these tires at 42 and wonder if its unsafe handling wise?

On a side note, i use chevron fuel injector cleaner every 4000-5000 miles. Costco sells them for a good price.

I always fill with highest grade Chevron with Techron Gas (includes the fuel injector cleaner), is Costco fuel injector cleaner necessary?

I suggest you do a couple cans/fillups with BG's 44K fuel system cleaner. You can get it on ebay. My Lexus dealer uses it and yeah if you got buildup in your fuel system this stuff will clean it out. You can tell its a different animal when you see it coming out of the can. It's considerably thicker than Techron.

I get about 10.5 litres per 100km mix bumper to bumper traffic and highway.

With the top down I get about 11.5litres per 100km.
