Rattle From Backseat Area
Hi there,
I have a very loud rattle coming from behind back seat, especially noticeable when the top and windows are up on bumpy roads. It sounds like coming from the black "package shelf" (or you may call it a mini tonnau cover?) right behind the backseat/wind blocker.
I search over the forum, noticing in the center of the car just under this cover there is a round black rubber bumper stop the size of a 25 cents. I turned it upward, the rattle stopped for a while. Unfortunately the rattle came back after a few days after I had my top down & back up.
Is there anything else I can do about it? It is really getting annoying.
Thanks very much!

I had the rubber stopper come off once and put it back on, but didn't notice any noise. I'd inspect both sides of the rubber stoppers and see if they are worn down or loose or need to be turned adjusted up. If I remember correctly turning them counter-clockwise raises them.
If you are under warranty-I'd let the dealer adjust it and fix it for you.

thanks again scdroptop.
unfortunately mine is a 03, warranty expired long ago. I notice only 1 stopper underneth the black package shelf in the middle.
Are you referring to the two stoppers at the far corner right at the edge of the trunk? I also turn those up but not helping much.

Maybe have someone take you for a drive...sit in the back seat and see if you can isolate the problem. Press down in different areas and see if you can figure out exactly what is rattling.
Could it even be the rear seatbelts?

Hey there! I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 2003 SC430 and I love it. I have a noise coming from my back seat also that might be the smae problem you discribe. I'm wondering if you ever resolved your issue.
Thanks

I was having the same issue, little by little the rattle was getting louder and louder until I took it to the dealer and found out that my rear struts were bad and that was the cause of the rattle. Installed new megan coilover kit and noise went away plus i have a great ride over old struts.

trussard, I think that Habious has the right idea. It may be difficult to determine whether the noise is coming from inside the trunk or in the area of the backseat or "package shelf". Sitting near the noise source when it is occuring will make a lot of difference in tracking down the noise source.
It sounds like it is related to the bumper that you adjusted, though your adjustment could have indirectly rectified the problem. Find your noise source first and then the fix will become more obvious.

There's a rubber spacer under the shelf that you can raise and lower. Sounds like you need to raise it.
