Default CPO or Not CPO, that is the question

Saw an 06 with a little over 30K miles. Asking around $30K but noticed the service history mentions work indicating body damage back around 14K. Probably pass on that one.

The second puzzles me more.

06 with 30K miles. Almost the same asking price ($31k). The car is at a local dealer but the service records indicate the local Lexus Dealer actually had this car previously. This begs the question, why wouldn't the lexus dealer simply certify this car and sell it themselves? Could it be "uncertifieable" and therefore sold at auction to a local mom and pop? Something to avoid or not a big deal?

For an 2006 model, what is the real worth of the CPO? I understand the value of the warranty is directly proportional to the reliability of the product but how much is the Lexus certification really worth, all things being equal between two cars?

Perhaps just ask the dealer if you can buy it CPO, and if not, why? You'll quickly find out how much more the CPO is worth, I would imagine somewhere between $1200 and $2000.

Based on hearsay so take this info with grain of salt - I have read that the CPO warranty cost to the dealer is apprx $900 plus any shop labor and parts required to get it in CPO shape. A typical 3 year warranty for the car sells for $1500-2000 retail.

Call your local dealer up and give them the VIN of the car you are thinking of buying. Ask them if they would be willing to sell you a Lexus Extended Service Plan (Platinum) for the car. Also ask them for service history. Tell them you are thinking about buying the car and want to get it baptized at their dealer after you buy it.

There are dozens of reasons why they might not have bought that car...or perhaps they even did buy it and couldn't move it. I've seen some SC's sit for a while too. Your prices on the 2006 are a little high though, IMO...I think you should be looking for a CPO car for that price already.

Uhhhh....like these! You can probably negotiate down on some $32k cars down to about $30k and get the CPO package plus the service done and they might have new tires, battery, brakes, wipers, etc due to the CPO process which you will not get on buying a wholesale car. Most Lexus dealers will hand pick CPO cars and they are not a sure thing just because year/mileage.
