Exclamation Closing Door By Pushing on Glass Window - Causing Damage?

Hello, I have a 2002 SC430. Sometimes I find myself closing my door by pushing on the top of the glass window, I am wondering if I am potentially causing damage to the window by using it to close the door?

I have noticed that my driver side window goes up and down slower than my passenger side. I wonder if this has anything to do with the door being closed for 10+ years using the window glass (by previous owners).

Please share your thoughts.

I have owned many convertibles and the rule of thumb has always been to "never" close the door by the window...mainly as it can also cause sealing issues between the door glass and rubber, which in turn may lead to leaking of water inside the vehicle when being washed especially with a pressure washer.

That being said...Lexus is a well made vehicle and may hold up better to these kinds of abuses opposed to other verts in the marketplace.

Doors have handles . I use mine to open and to close the door.

My father used to remind us of this as kids too. Thanks for the fond memory.

I always close my door with the handle; BUT most of my paassengers like to window close the door. When I tell them not to, they look kind of upset or "big deal"

What about your passengers? I wonder people generally like using window to close the door or just my passengers ??

The door windows are carefully aligned both horizontally and vertically. The reason, as others have mentioned, is obvious; so the door and glass make a solid weather tight seal when closed. Using the glass as a "handle" may and probably will alter the position of the glass over time.

Additionally, there have been threads in the past with complaints of leakage and wind noise traced back to weather stripping component #2, the triangular piece, where the window meets the rubber at its upper most position (this piece)
So, like others have said, it's just not a good practice. You might equate it with cigarette smoking; it's a bad habit you need to stop, cause it's going to cost you a lot of money in the long run.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I have now stopped this bad habit thanks to the insight I learned here.

I don't close the door by pushing on the window simply because that puts fingerprints on the window.

I usually close the door by using the door handle, especially on nicer cars.

I'm no mechanic and I'm no engineer, and I only took one year of physics in high school, but I know enough instinctively not to move a heavy door by pushing on an extended and unframed piece of glass. That will always cause fingerprints.

i agree, fingerprints are very important. don't worry about the glass, that can be replaced.
