Hi Folks,

I just joined today since I made an offer on a 2002 SC430 with 106000 miles and I am a little nervous about the high mileage. It drives nicely but I violated a rule I have about buying a high mileage car. But it was irrestible and well priced. I am expecting to get it in a few days. Hope I made a good choice....was considering an Eos.....I currently drive a 2009 es350 and it is nice and relieable so I went for it! Wish me luck!

Welcome... Did you get a maintenance history on the car? Have you read through the sticky thread on buying a used SC430 to know about it warts?

You made a good choice. I would buy an SC with 500,000 miles, rather than a brand new Eos (or what I call a Pos.)

I am picking the car up as soon as the wheels are refinished. The chrome was actually coming away fron the outer part of the rim. Obviously winter driven.
I asked for all maint. records especially since I was told $6000 was spent last year on service. Sounds high. They cited privacy concerns but are trying.
BTW, how can I find that thread on the 02 SC warts? Excuse me, I am new, but thanks all for the great comments.

Sticky thread buying an sc.

Not a whole lotta warts though. Stereo speakers blow, and generally folks here dislike the runflats and the way they ride. A few other nit picks. All in all a fine car. Bought mine w 148k, now has 182k

Yes boys the car does have a few warts. Every car does. Just check out the list of TSBs and SSCs. While it's true they are few they are still there.

If you have not found the sticky thread already, here's a link: Buying an SC430. It covers all the points and questions you should be asking BEFORE you put you hard earned dollars into it.

Re: Service history...Were their lips actually moving when they said they put 6k into the car? Was that at a Lexus dealer? The first thing you need to do is get the car's VIN. Then go here: Lexus drivers site sign up, it's free, add the VIN as your car, and get the DEALER service history. Service done at shops other than a dealer will only be there if a previous owner manually enter it. Then, once you are the new owner, if you go to a dealer, you can ask for the full and more detailed service history on the car. They have it in their nationwide database.
Oh, BTW, I love my SC...it is a incredibly reliable piece of engineering and will give you years of enjoyment. Depending on what you've driven lately, you may need an electronics upgrade however. I can't seem to find cassette tapes any longer.

Welcome to CL, Ray.

You will love the SC, the guys on here know everything about the car and will be able to help you with almost any questions you have.
Be careful though, if you are into modding, this place will empty your wallet pretty damn quickly.

Posts some pics when you take possession.

Best regards
Steve

Thanks for all the kind words. I am really encouraged!
Update on the wheels : the refinish guy does not want to take it on. He says the chrome is too hard to remove and then the finish will be porous and not polished or shiny. I am thinking of taking the $400 credit in lieu of a refinish and buying after market wheels. Any tips?

There are tons of neat wheels out there in all price ranges. Mine are Touren TR-60's at about $165 each. You can get into the thousands for wheels if you so desire. Check out the pics of the cars on the forum and see what catches your eye.

I went thru the pic thread but ultimately went to tire rack website. You can plug in your car and color and see how the available wheels look on the car.
