I bought both valve cover gaskets and spark plugs to install this past weekend. I ended up not using the valve cover gaskets because all 9 bolts on each valve cover was loose as you guys mentioned. i tightened them all down and didn't bother replacing them. Just replaced all spark plugs instead. Saved myself a couple of hours but now I have to return the gaskets. best tools to use for this are 1/4" joint and different length extensions. Also, pressure wash the engine bay before working on it, it makes the job cleaner.

also, keep one of the kits because it will begin to leak again.
i tightened the bolts twice and they started leaking again. I kept the gasket kit and changed them...all is good now.

Thanks Trini, you helped me quite a bit. I didn't remove all the items you suggested, but got the job done (tightening the loose bolts), and it appears the very small oil leakage has stopped.

Hmm - now I wonder if I really needed a new valve cover gasket after I bought my 2002 earlier this year, though I trust the local shop I've used for decades. Carfax didn't indicate any record of it being replaced - and with 151k miles on it it probably needed it.
BUT - I might check the bolts annually to make sure none are loose. Does anyone know what the recommended torque settings might be?
