to those that have done their own timing belt
I am midway on the timing belt change out and have two questions.
First, just to confirm that the water pump gasket does not need any silicone on it.
Second, on the idler pulley sub assembly, see below. Can you just replace the bearing? Mine just has some noise, and I hate to pay for another entire part.
Anyone?

I haven't changed mine yet....but I have done a couple Toyota's and YES you can just replace the bearing and save some serious money. On the Toyota's, there was a "C" clip holding the bearing in, remove it and tap the bearing out. Choosing a good replacement bearing is key. By using the number stamped on the bearing, I was able to come up with the exact same number bearing, made in Japan, but out of a Yamaha dirt bike. It was actually the same hardness, etc, but it had better seals to keep the lubricant in and the dirt out. The bearing cost something like $9. Taking it out and putting the new one in took all of about 3 minutes.

Fyi not servicable
I had a puller on one side and tried to press it from the other side really gentle. likely 1 ton of pressure with no movement. Well, then it moved across the room....

I had the same broken under tray or whatever you might call it. I managed to use pieces of black license plate frame and epoxy it back together. I used the 3/4" size binder clips to hold them while the epoxy was curing and drying and left them for a good 3-4 days. Got some screws from AutoZone and now is as good as it can be.

I hope I didn't mislead you, the bearings I've replaced are in the pulley on the left side of the sub assembly in your diagram picture. In the diargram, it is referred to as .ssy------------

I thought with a picture there would not be any confusion about what I was talking about.
No worries.... It was making noise, so needed changed, so from a 20,000 feet view, it was junk anyway and worth a shot.
