You guys are sick. 15 posts on illumination of the gauges. I never even thought about such a thing. I like the three pod look though and I know the GS ones were love it or hate as for older SC's I dont recall. Anyways, why am I contributing to this.
Happy New Year!

I thought the same thing, and my contributions here have only been submitted in an effort to go for the record before the end of the year. I think we are close to getting the trophy for "Longest Thread on the Most Insignificant Topic, 2002."
We will share the large cash prize.
Go, baby!

Why is this such an insignificant topic? I think that it is just as significant, if not more significant, than talk about tacky after market modifications like spoilers, et al. What is so wrong with discussing what one does not like about a car? The SC430 is a fine vehicle, but it is not the end all and be all. It is a car, and like every other car, it has faults. In my opinion, the plain gauges are not Lexus like, and lead to disappointment in an otherwise fabulous car. Anyway, why does it matter how many responses there are to a thread? I don't think the internet is going to run out of space.

Well, as stated Lexus did start the electroluminicent gauges in the ES, LS and SC back in 1990 (92 for the ES). I also think it is a wonderful luxurious feature. OBVIOUSLY, so does the competition as the new S class, most all Infinitis have the same thing.
Optitron gauges are the gauges ONLY in the GS series. It emits the white on black hue. Basically it is the reverse of the LS gauges. Another cool thing of the Optiron gauges is it adjusts to surrounding light, when you enter a tunnel, it dims, when you in sunlight, it gets brighter.
THough I do not own a SC 430, I do wish they had the electro gauges somehow. As stated, it was decided the gauges would wash out in the sunlight with the top down.

Hey,
anyone know if there are any mods available in this area? Different colored gauge clusters, etc.. (im talking about replacing the original ones, not adding additional ones on the doors pillar)

Having owned an LS400, SC400, and GS400, and the current owner of an SC430, I can tell you the gauge cluster on our car is not cheap like on a Kia, but it's ugly and out of place on this car IMHO. Nothing wrong in admitting it.
But everything in life is a compromise. The good news is our dash will never go dark or lose intensity over time (it happens), and like others have said, we'll never have problems seeing the gauges with the top down.
The new look of the '06 gauges are a definite improvement IMO, but I'd have still liked a flashier cluster, even at the expense of less visibility under certain conditions with the top down. Nothing is perfect in life
. Good day.
