Default mounting a spare tire in the trunk

Has anyone here mounted a spare in the trunk? Several threads discuss alternate tires. For those of you who have switched to non-runflats (or are planning to), what are your plans for a spare?

Changes required would include: 1) a trunk bottom panel/carpet with a cutout above the spare tire well; 2) a mount to secure the tire to the rear trunk wall; 3) a tire cover; 4) et cetera. I asked my dealer if there is conversion kit available for this purpose -- they are not aware of any.

Curious to know how others have approached this.

Default Spare Tire Assembly

Back in Sept 01, my Lexus dealer gave me a quote of $1007. This includes wheel disc, temporary spare, valve, spare carrier assy, spare wheel plate, spare wheel bracket, cushions....However, about a month ago, he said that Lexus will be reducing that cost...by making it a much more simple assemply....He also told me that Lexus NOW has a "softer riding" Bridgestone Run-Flat...In light of that, I may reconsider going to conventionals...My current, original Bridgestone run-flats have 20,000 miles...and are good for another 4000 miles.....If you do go conventional....you don't need the whole trunk assemply (to keep it in place)...a wheel cover will do......I'll be getting more info soon and will post....

Default Run-Flat replacements

I will be interested to hear your experience. I just purchased a SC430 and love the car except for the rough ride. I would like to know the options for tires.

Thanks

I carry an electric air pump and a plug kit - about $40.

I figure that I'll get advanced warning at 27lbs when I have a leak. So, I think that I can limp to the nearest service station. Otherwise, I have a cell phone and the numbers for AAA and Lexus.

If you want to add a spare to the trunk there is a TSIB for it. TSIB PG014-01. The 4 page TSIB outlines all the part numbers and the installation.

Anyone who wants a copy of it, PM me your e-mail and I'll send it to you.

In case anyone wants to see what the "trunk" looks like with a spare, here's a pic I found somewhere quite a while ago.

Unfortunately, the spare takes up all the room where my grocery bags go when I put the top down.
