Default Installing trunk weather strip gasket for sc430

Has anyone installed a rubber weather strip on an SC430 trunk? The seal is on the forward edge of the trunk lid, nearest the back window. I bought the weatherstrip online, Lexus part # 64463-24020.

This rubber was completely missing when we got the car, and I'm not sure what part of the adhesive goes on the leading edge of the metal (the strip has an inside and outside sticky strip, which overlap by an inch).

Any tips, tricks and advice would be nice. I'd like to get this on straight and clean the first time!

Thanks again,
Marty

Sorry Marty, but I can't help you with the weather stripping. But I do have a question for you. If you would please tell us what that seal cost? I just had the lower seal replaced because water was leaking into the trunk. I thought they were replacing the seal that you have but they replace the one that runs on the lower trunk area. Also were is the water coming into the trunk with the seal that you have? Thanks and good luck in your mission.

Default Weather Strip 2002 SC430

I paid $24.00 for the weather seal. Mine was completely missing when we got the car. After heavy rains, there was a very small puddle of water in the middle of the trunk, on the upper area where the top fits in.

I dried up the water, and parked with the car facing down the driveway, and my water issue ended. Still won't help over the long haul, so I ordered this gasket. I have a Lexus supplier in Miami that does me some great favors.

Hope this helps!
Marty

I spent an hour cleaning up the old gasket and figured out the replacement proceedure. The new weather seal fits in a channel and the long glue strip goes towards the front of the car.

Default Not sure if I got it right, but check the photos

I placed the new weather strip into the channel to check fit. The sticky glue had 3 overlapping sections, 2 short on the ends, and a long one in the center. I put the long glue section towards the front of the car, so the thick side is towards the back. Not sure if this was correct, but check the photos and let me know if I have it backward.

To answer an earlier question, the gasket was missing because I purchased the car from a moron. Lots of really bad, but mostly unimportant fixes to the car. Have been reversing the issues over the past few weeks.

The grey carpet with logo in the background of the photos is an old floor mat I used to block out the sky so the photos wouldn't be fully back lit. On the last photo, there is a 3/4" overhang which I trimmed with a knife. I tried installing from the center out, but came up too short on one side and too long on the other. Probably wasn't quite in the 'center' of the car when I started.

Cleaning the old rubber off took about an hour, with a combination of soft plastic followed by finger and then thumbnails, as each cracked and broke. I still have 3 working fingers and one thumb, thanks for asking.

Looks like you have got it right! just needs to be center i guess? or cut the extra sticking out on one side and stick it on the other, glue the rubbers together? looks like its hot there so I would leave the car under the sun for a while so the new seal sticks well! then best way to check is put a sheet inside the trunk.. get a hose and spray from all angles very hard and see if any gets inside!

Goodluck!
