Looking at an '07 sc430 with 65k miles

I bought a 2007 a year ago with 11K miles for $31K from the original owner. It was essentially a brand new car except it needed a new battery. So I'd say the $24K is not too good to be true. Given that I paid only $8K more for an essentially brand new car, I would not have paid $24K for the same car with with $65K miles. Not saying it's a bad deal, but based on the deal I found, I wouldn't have. I looked for over a year before finding this one.

Correct me if my facts are wrong. I'm old so my memory is not that good. If I remember correctly, you bought the car "as is" knowing that it had an undiagnosed electrical problem because it needed to be jump started in order to test drive it or drive it home. Fortunately it worked out to only be a bad battery. If the problem wasn't the battery it could have been an expensive repair.
The seller also refused to obtain the required California smog check certificate required to register the car. Seller also refused to let you drive it home with his license tags on it so you got it home creatively.
The private seller was also a celebrity, well known to us older guys.
Let me ask you, would you sell it today for $31k?
Additionally, 2 months ago I decided that we didn't need 4 Lexus cars in the driveway for just the 2 of us. I took my 2 SC430s and my LS460 to CarMax and 2 Lexus dealers to see what they would offer. Dealers and CarMax offered me more for my 2007 than what you paid for your SC430 on a private sale. I decided to part with my LS460 since I wasn't driving it much. We kept the 2 SC430s and the CT200h.

Strange. Thought I had replied to this.
It was a little bit of a roll of the dice. I didn't even know who I was buying it from. The woman I was dealing with was super secretive/cloak and dagger.
However, I got the price reduced by the cost of the alternator which really was the most likely worst case scenario. I had managed to add the car to my lexus account by claiming I owned it so i could see the service records which were complete and serviced by a Lexus dealership. The records are anonymous in that they don't show personal information, just summaries of services.
Plus the car was still under the power train warranty for another 6 months, so there was some protection there too.
In the end it ended up being a battery but I was prepared for worse.
Would I sell it today for $31K? Probably not because then I'd have to turn around and find the same car again. So the real answer is no because we still want the car. If we had to sell it for financial reasons, then we'd probably sell it for that, but I'd probably start out asking for more.

You definitely got a unique deal.
There is a local dealer who specializes in these types of cars. Here's an example of a current listing for a 2007 with 19,000 miles, asking $39,900. It will probably go for $38.5k and should sell rather quickly.

Ecargirl, Welcome to the forum. Be sure to read all the stickies at the top of this forum, there's tons of useful information there.
Sometimes you can still purchase a bumper to bumper warranty from the dealer. Others have purchased aftermarket policies to save money.
Best of luck with your search and keep us aprised.
