Timing Belt and Water Pump Replaced
I had my water pump and timing belt replaced yesterday. 02 sc430 62,000 miles Also all serpentine belts. Including checking bushings, brake pads and all fluids. Price $876.00 Toyota Dealer. I asked for the old timing belt and water pump. They said the belt was showing a slight fraying along the edges, I couldn't see anything. They showed me some drops of pink in the water pump which they said was a slight leakage.

Do you think you could have gone longer from the condition of the belt?

No more than it was worn I am sure I could have gone many more miles. The only trouble is that you don't know until you pull it off what condition it is in.

He absolutely could have gone longer. The only unknown is how much longer.
Preventive Maintenance intervals for items that would cause significant damage if run to failure are set very low. The consequences of a failed timing belt in a SC430 can be very expensive and leave you stranded. Manufactures set intervals well below expected MTBF for these types of items.
Visual inspection of the belt may not be able to identify hidden fiber cord damage.
My 38 year work career was spent in some type of service management. I always said a PM in the AM saves a UM in the PM. UM = Unscheduled Maintenance.

This may have come up before, but I decided to post again here. You can buy an Aisin TKT-021 kit for the SC430 for about $155.00 on ebay or Amazon. It contains the belt, water pump, both idlers, and the hydraulic tensioner. Never heard of Aisin? It is partly owned by Toyota. I think it is about 25%. This is the Japanese company that makes the parts for Toyota/Lexus. My understanding is that the parts are identical to the Lexus parts. Literally made in the same factory. I think others on this forum have used them in the past and would have some experience.

I have looked at that package from Aisin. Looks good. Is it complete?

Am quoted Parts and Labor $700. Good? Ex Lexus Tech.

after I had made the deal to have mine replaced I kind of regretted having the water pump replaced since I have replaced several water pumps in Fords, Mercedes, and Jaguars. I think the water pump replacement costs as much as the timing belt.

The reason to go ahead and replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt is because the labor is practically free since it has to be removed regardless. Water pumps typically just do not last a long time and replacing it at 90k miles is good practice and practical and will probably save you money in the long run.

I have seen combinations of the set. Confusing at times. I saw a Lexus Tech do an SC430’s timing belt (partially) and it sure did not look like a lot of parts were replaced. Saw the water pump, seals, did not get to see if the idlers were replaced, but they should be. The Aisin package is better than the Sewell from what I have seen.
