Serpentine/Pulley squealing

Serpentine/Pulley squealing
I have a 2005 SC430. When I start it up it makes a squealing noise, and the more I accelerate, the more it squeals. I read through this entire thread:

I did as PearlPower suggested and sprayed it with some WD-40 (the top center pulley area) and the noise stopped, but not for very long. Think I need a new belt but I'm not sure which one to order. The thread says Goodyear 4060882 Gatorback Poly-V Belt, but Amazon claims that does not fit my 2005 SC430 and that I should get Goodyear 4060887 Gatorback Poly-V Belts. Anyone have any idea?

Lexus/Toyota part number for the belt is 90916-02584
How many miles on your 05? Have you had the waterpump replaced yet?
Does it squeal with the AC turned off?
There could be something dragging that is causing the belt to slip.

Squealing that doesn't go away usually points to more than a worn belt. Something is running tight, and/or a tensioner isn't doing it's job. Simplest step at this point is to replace the belt, and check all the pulleys in the process, and start from there. The AC suggestion is a good one.

The idler pulley bearing is usually the culprit when it comes to "bearing squeal" noise. Pull the idler pulley, and there is a "C" clip holding the bearing in place. Remove "C" clip, tap bearing out from the back side, and take it to a bearing supply store and they should be able to provide you with a suitable replacement for less than $12. Bearings come in several quality levels. Tell them what it is for, and they should provide you with durable replacement.
I'm not absolutely sure what your bearing no. is, but in the past, the bearings I've replaced are bearing #6301 size. This size is one Yamaha motorcycles uses on their dirt bikes, and their bearing is very well made, has good hardened steel components, and has especially good dirt and mud resistant seals. They last longer than the bearings Toyota uses.

I have 63000 miles on my SC. Water pump and timing belt are original.
Thanks for the part number. How do I know which goodyear gatorback that relates to? As I mentioned, Amazon says the one mentioned in the original thread will not work and suggested a different one.
It squeals with the A/C off. Starts squealing right when the car is turned on and in park, and the squealing gets "faster" (if you will) when I give it some gas. Once the car is on for a bit, it doesn't really seem to squeal as much when in park, but still does when I'm driving.

That's definitely a pulley bearing. Track it down and replace. If it is the water pump make sure you do the timing belt replacement. Get the belt ending in 882

Thanks - got a chance today to show it to my uncle who is a mechanic. He pulled on the belt and was able to pull the belt off without even loosening the tensioner pulley, so he recommended replacing the tensioner pulley assembly and the belt. So I am going to order these 2 items. Sound right?

I'm not sure if the overheated belt stretched, so the tensioner may or may not be bad. I tend to replace things when I get a reason to, just to be proactive (as long as it isn't huge $$$ and/or huge amount of work). If the $$ and effort look reasonable, then perhaps changing the tensioner is reasonable. However, you can also test the tensioner (e.g., how much does the belt deflect when a standard load is applied perpendicular to the direction of travel) and if it is working, then don't bother.

kjcole, that's kind of what I was figuring. It was only an extra 25 dollars to do the whole assembly instead of just the pulley so I figured I'd just do it while it was apart anyway, along with the belt. I've had the car for 9 years and haven't spent much at all on repairs *knocks on wood* so for 60 bucks to get rid of some squealing, I'm okay with that.

I had the same problem about two months ago. I felt that it was only the serpentine belt that was squealing. I diagnosed this the same way you did by adding a drop of WD40 to the actual pulley which removed the squeal. I took it to Lexus and they recommended I also do the serpentine belt, water pump, timing belt, all the gaskets. They totaled the job at $900 with labor and parts. I only have 32,000 miles on my car and for the most part it's been garage kept. Now it's my daily driver. So I did more research on the timing belt and found that if the timing belt were having problems I would have trouble with acceleration and probably would have a Check Engine Light. So i opted out of the Lexus service and went to Firestone and had only the serpentine belt changed for $65. I asked what type of belt and they would use and they said it was just an OEM equivalent belt by Dayco. No more squeal and saved a ton of money. Just a heads up to anyone who reads this thread and is in a similar situation.
