Read about someone having to repaint an 06 white ( starfire pearl )
due to peeling clear-coat. The car was from the south, so lots
of sun beating on it. Anyone know of any problems with
the clear-coats of any model years ?
Good stories so far. Toyota and Nissan experimented with "soft" paint
in the mid-to-late 2000s. It was a more "environmentally" friendly paint, but
more prone to rock chips and just didn't have as tough of a outer shell.
Nissan 370Z owners have complained about this kind of paint on their
cars. Many people install clear film on the hood and front bumper to
protect the paint.
Im peeling the original clear coat in my 02' Silver SC ONLY under the rear tail lights and top parts of rear bumper, not a whole lot to bug me a lot just yet, not noticeable much in Silver thank god. Although Ive only owned my SC for about 3 months I cant tell you if its been garaged its whole life or not, I think not, and sadly it still Isnt, which doesn't help the case. Oh well always a good reason for a color change

Now rock chips are another matter. I think that my front end was repainted before I bought it. (I never could get a straight story out of the former owner other than that he sweared it had never been in a wreck. No record of a wreck either.) The chips on my front bumper got really bad so that when my car was backed into by a Suburban (at the airport parking garage), I had the body shop replace my front bumper along with the damaged front quarter panel.
Now it looks nice but I also added a clear bra over the bumper to protect it from future rocks. However, I believe that the first repaint by the former owner was just a bad job that was poorly prepped.
when I was shopping for an SC430 I saw two that had peeling paint, one on the trunk by the brake light, and another one on the hood I believe. I thought it was strange

I have an '06 Matador red sc430 that within the last 3 months has just taken a turn for the worse it's been under a carport for the last year I rinse it off once in a while everything looks good I took it out washed it started seeing all these white spots on it which I believe now is from wax getting down in the little pits where the clear coat was wearing off. had detailed with a clay bar and some polishing and now it's way worse and I got clear coat peeling off on the on the roof an the trunk it's worse on the roof 2006 Matador red I'm sole owner only 16,000 miles
I have a 2004 Absolute red we got last September so I don't know its garaging history, the paint seems very good other than the third brake light where the clear coat is peeling.
2006 SC430 Matador Red Mica, car was my Dad's daily driver that was always parked outside on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Clear coat started thinning out on roof, hood and trunk at 10 years old and 150,000 miles. In 2018 about one third of the clear coat was worn off at which time the car was heavily damaged in a hail storm. It has since become my car, was repainted and is parked in the garage.
I had a 2003 and I don't remember any clear coat problems, but the 2005 I have now has some clear coat peeling on the driver side door. Not sure of garage history.
My 2003 has massive clear coat failing on all 'flat' surfaces. Not garaged. I am not comfortable with $3K-$5 to repaint as it will continue to be in the sun all the time.
