Default 50K miles, 12 yr old=when to change timing belt?

First off, why did Lexus choose a timing belt that can hurt the engine if it breaks? I got this car 3 mos back and all records show they never had h20pump, timing belt replaced. Is there other stuff to replace, or can I skip serpentine etc b/c of rel. low mi.?
BTW, any underdrive pulleys out there? Would this be time to change em? I don't think there's much advantage to them, right?
Some people on here say Toyota can do the work-cheaper than Lexus 1,200USD...would I be running risks even if they have same engine in someof their cars?

Toyota will do it cheaper have them do it. I replaced mine at 73000 was like new + water pump + other things. we just replaced my sisters Honda belt at 140,000 + pump looked new.

It's not the timing belt. It's the head design, valve time, and piston design that results in "interference" engine. Most engines these days are like that due to their higher compression ratio that brings piston closer to the top of the head. More often found on engines that take premium fuel because of their higher compression ratio and more advanced timing. The result is better performance.

12 years old is way past due. Change it now.

As a Lexus mechanic explained to me it's either age or miles. At 24,500 miles and at 12 years old when the timing belt was inspected there was slight cracking on the belt. The idlle pully was starting to show some wear. I was very happy I had the service performed. My car now runs like news.

The belt manufactures say change rubber composite belts at about 8 yr so you're over due. Do the entire 90k service and you wont regret it.you ight want to change the plugs too - easy enough DIY and I fledt a great improvement.
