Default Flushing power steering fluid through return line and installing inline filter

Just had my power steering flushed at Jiffy Lube today. I was going to do it myself, but I didn't feel like it and I also wanted to see how JL does the procedure. It was pretty much the same manual method outlined on CL, but they did a really through job and it only cost $67 with taxes.

I do still feel a complete system flush may be needed. There is a little bit of resistance in my steering wheel and I think that may be due to dirt and other contaminants in the system.

My thought is to use the return line to drain the system and install an inline filter, using the same procedure used to drain the transmission fluid.

Can you all help me locate the appropriate line? There should be a return line I can tap into.. Thanks

Although I'm not sure how well an inline filter is going to help, the whole bottom of the reservoir is a filter/strainer. it filters/strains the oil going in and coming out.. with a sticky steering wheel try seafoaming it with transtune... it helped me out.

Default Replacing leaky P/S pump

Search the forum and you shall find.

It is good to know the P/S reservoir has an integral filter. The best procedure would be remove the reservoir and clean it thoroughly with Brake Clean, one of those orange cleaners or some other plastic friendly solvent before re-installing , or if a high mile car, just replace the reservoir. Seafoam or other miracle mystery treatments are not going to take particulates out of the system. But I'm glad others have had good luck with it.

The next thing I am going to do is replace the power steering pump since the sensor "area" is starting to leak. Rebuilt Pumps and filters are cheap. (See Autozone web site for one set of options.) I don't want the alternator to be victim.

I am going to put in an after-market in-line filter. I'm advised it probably goes in the low pressure return line. Overall, this filtration scheme is similar to the ABC system in MB. Optimally one would replace the filter and renew the fluid every season according to my tech.
