thats from the anti glare coating. Mine did it on the radio. I used plastX and removed the coating. I still had no problems reading it in the direct sunlight. On any of the screens , cleaners will mess up the coating. I think bgw70 has the best idea not to have problems. Using the eyeglass cleaning wipes. They are very gentle.

I'd say there might be sales from refurbishers but I have yet to see a source of broken units. I have no idea what people are doing with them.

Now, if you made a reverse LCD version...
I am actually busy preparing to move to Florida in a week.

I've gotten one unit from a member here that has missing digits and I checked out the solder connections and there was nothing wrong with them. I also tried reflowing the LCD controller IC and that didn't help either. That convinced me that the most likely cause is that the LCD segments have simply wore out. There is some more things I could test and/or try, but all projects have been on hold since January. I will hopefully be back at things when I get the new workshop set up down there.

What might be beneficial is to scan the layout of the LCD and look into a group buy to a Chinese custom LCD manufacturer. I'd personally love to see a reverse LCD version (black background with red or white digits).

Edit: Doh! Replied to the wrong post!

I removed the lens from one of mine and just replaced it with a custom piece of anti-reflective plexi (they make it for picture frames). On the other, I did what Coleroad said and stripped off the coating.

How would you compare the two methods?
