Default More bad news...charcoal canister

Hey All;
After my accident there has been one problem after another.
Expensive and complicated problems.
Just repaired the electrical issue with ABS ($700).
Now my mechanic tells me the charcoal canister above the fuel tank could be bad.
If that is the case, I may throw in the towel..

Thoughts?

It is a closed system what fault code or codes is it throwing. Each component needs to be checked make sure the gas cap is good. Make sure the leak detection pump is working. The vent solenoid and purg valve works correctly. Need to check all hoses in the system are not leaking. All these other components are much cheaper. I would pay the dealer the diagnostic fee then fix it myself.

Yes, I have been down all the rabbit holes and am currently paying for a diagnostic. Already checked VSV, Intake solenoid SV, and replaced gas cap..

Really there can only be a couple problems with the canister. It can crack and leak, become plugged ( raw fuel saturated it). So maybe your accident cracked it. Usually one of the other components goes bad. Theoretically the canister should outlast the car. The charcoal doesn't go bad. It just holds fuel vapors in the canister by means of the charcoal.

If you do end up needing a new canister by all means do find a used one.

My mechanic used his smoke machine and in fact found crack on canister. But he has a hook up and found a OEM part for $143 and is installing free of change. Guess I dodged a bullet on this one!!

Whew! I'm still following your threads. You sure are going through a lot but as much effort as you're putting into your car, good news always chases the clouds away. Glad your mechanic hooked you up and things are coming back into focus for ya!

i am curious as what exactly needed to be done with the ABS because my button won't reactivate the ABS it only stays off i have a tuned up as well as straight pipe sc430. I kissed a wall and had to cut the driver side half of the car and weld another 1 on because of structure damage to the unibody. I had to disconnect the charcoal box. Unbolt the main support frame off the that side that supports the diffrential. Just allot of stuff man. Please I'd love all insight on where and how you acquired the charcoal box as well as the issue with the ABS. PLEASE much appreciation man. This car has history with family i can't give it up.

Hey my friend. I would start a new post about your issues. This post is 6 years old.

Also, you threw out a lot of information and it sounds like you have two problems. The charcoal canister and the ABS light. I would start a thread for each of the issues

Same issue; 2003 SC. Also finding that the 2004 plus charcoal canisters
apparently do not fit the 2003 and older SCs. Part numbers 7774024090
for 2006 and newer and 7774030273 for the 2003 and older SC.

The 7774030273 is a couple hundred dollars cheaper and also is supposed
to fit GS300, GS430, SC430 2002-05.

Some ebay sellers say the newer canister also fits the 2003 but I'd not
trust them. They look a bit different.

Also, my SC was suddenly dying on the road randomly but has not
recently although I've not driven it much after a new radiator which
my mechanic thought was the problem - lost some coolant and that
did something. Not sure about that. The forums had various possible
solutions but nothing definitive. I seem to remember one speculation
was this charcoal canister going bad, so maybe there is a connection.

Why do you think it is the canister? Did u get a code or something? I thought my canister was bad because I was showing a code for a vacuum leak. It turns out the leak was under the hood. The number of canister leaks I have heard of on this board in 5 years is MAYBE 1 or 2, so it is not a very common problem unless your car was in an accident.

It may not be, except I'm never surprised when it turns out
to be the least probable, but worst case probability. I have
no code although I've read canister failure does show a code.
But maybe a half ruined charcoal canister does not trigger a
code? When my car died twice in one day there was no code
for whatever caused it.

During my exploration of why my car was just stopping
in the middle of the road for no apparent reason I
believe there was mention of a canister failure. A gas
cap was also mentioned. Haven't been able to find that
mention of a canister failure causing stopping but I
remember things like that fairly well.

What happened to trigger that memory was I could
not fill my tank at a Sunoco and I put the two together.
I've been driving around town to see if the car stopping
has been fixed with the new radiator, which seemed
like a less probable root cause than something like a
clog in the fuel filter or a fuel pump issue (though people
say the fuel pump does not often go bad).

I really hope you are right and glad to see a canister
seems like an unusual incident report. I was going to go
to another Sunoco - I am filling with Sunoco because
I thought bad fuel might also be a possibility - today but
most are closed today, Sunday and anyway, it is raining
so I'll keep it garaged. I want to try another gas nozzle
before I spend for an ebay canister, about $150 plus
another $150 labor.

Want to get one used as Coleroad suggested, but with as
few miles as possible since that video convinced me the
canister failure is due to gas guys overfilling the tank.
I'm sure they've done it with all used canisters. The
2002 - 2005 SC430 7774030273 canister also fits the
2005 GS300 and 2005 GS430 according to rock auto,
so both expand the universe of possible newer but used
canisters to search for. Not sure about the 2005 GS300
as I see them on ebay with a different part number.
