P0051 together with VSC and VSC Off Lights
P0051 together with VSC and VSC Off Lights
Over the weekend I had multiple P0051 and VSC and VSC Off Lights CEL’s
I have reset them using my OBDII scanner. It keeps on coming back.
This means the BANK 2 SENSOR 1 (just before the CAT) is reading low temps and therefore throwing a code. I get this.
Question is why do the VSC lights go “ON” too?
This started when I installed my ScanGage e this weekend. This is a change point.
Before I go purchase a Denso sensor, I would like to perform a series of tests:
1. Remove the ScanGage e. Test drive if any of the CELs (P0051 and VSC) come back.
2. If the same set comes back, clear the VSC lights code using our home made device.
If the VSC lights disappear and the P0051 comes back, I will replace the BANK 2 SENSOR 1 Oxygen sensor. Prior to replacing, I will check for wiring issues on this sensor.
Anybody has gone through this P0051+VSC Lights issue?

Well your plan of attack will fix it got to be one of those things.
I wonder why code readers, tech stream, and so on seem to set the vsc lights. Like you said wonder if that's it, or just a coincidence that it threw the code after. I've run my elm-327 and iPad, and it hasn't done that. I use it for the custom gauges, or live sensor read outs. I'm just wondering what the difference is that some set it off and others don't. Like tech stream I can activate certain things like the o2 sensor heater. It definitely doesn't do all the things tech stream can though. Anyway my point is I do two way communications with Ecu. I'm curious to find out your results.

According to Retroplay, the scanner he used was connected up to the CAN bus (IIRC) also which caused the error. When he disconnected that specific line, the scanner no longer caused the errors.

I currently have the P0051 and VSC Lights on. It was convenient for me to clean the codes via the Scangage e, however it was very persistent, after 5 miles, they would turn on again.
Tonight I will clear the codes and then unplug the scangage e and see if the P0051 comes back as quick. Same as the VSC lights.
I will all keep you posted.

Mandy, your plan of attack sounds logical and correct.

Last night I went as far as clearing the codes through the scangage e and unplugging the gage.
I let it run for a little while but did not get a chance to take it for spin to see if the CEL will light up again. It was raining and will rain for the next couple of days. I will have to chill for now and wait for it to clear so I can take it for a spin.

Update:
Disconnected the Scangage e.
A few miles down the road, the CEL lit up and a millisecond later the VSC VSC OFF lit up.
Time to look at getting an O2 Sensor and a DIY.

I'm not sure exactly why, but it is normal for the VSC and TRAC lights to come on with some CEL errors. Mine did that when I got a P0420 code and had to replace the driver side CAT.
Your Bank 2 Sensor 1 ( front ) O2 sensor is in the passenger side exhaust header. I believe it's easiest to remove from beneath the car. You will have to remove the plastic under engine shields for access. On the brighter side, the sensors electrical connection is to the engine harness and does not run inside the car like the rear O2 sensors. Try to find the correct size O2 sensor socket with the wire harness cut-out. It will make removal easier.

I am curious, what is the rational?
Does the ECM compare bank one against bank two?
