Good find bgw. I looked and wasn't able to find it. I guess I haven't lost it all to senility yet.

I gather that RetroPlay doesn't monitor the forum any more. Didn't he start his own blog or something? Anyone have that link?

His blog is at http://retrosc430.blogspot.co.uk/ but hasn't been updated since Feb 2016.

I browse here once in a while. I have just been extremely busy lately.

I see in the original thread I had been asked to provide some pictorial guide. I have not had time to do that. However, I had found this video on youtube that shows you the really important part.

It is showing a ford 6-disc changer, but the internal mechanism is identical and the failure shown in the video is identical.

The only difference is the way to get access to it. On the SC430 radio, you simply remove the screws for the top cover and then pull it out minding the tabs that go under the plastic of the front faceplate.

In the video, he shows using a hook tool and connects the tiny springs to the side metal pieces. In my case, I had just used toothpicks across the mechanism to hold the springs.

If you are going to sell your radio and ship it, I advise putting it in SHIP MODE which protects the trays and lens. This is detailed in the service manual. I don't have access to it at the moment, but I will post the instructions as soon as I can.

I got an error 3 on my CD player so I took it out and took it apart. It was pretty easy to get apart. There was a broken CD in it. When I was tugging on the top cap, I pulled the springs too hard and stretched them out so they don't work anymore.

If I had watched this video first, I would have known better.

If you watch this video and it doesn't scare you, I'd say for you to give it a try. Afterall, it is like 8 screws and 3 springs and your CD player doesn't work now anyways.

If you do lose the springs, I am betting you can probably buy the Ford radio this guy is showing for around $20-30 (I believe it is PN YW4F-18C815-AC - 2002 Ford Thunderbird) on ebay and salvage the springs (and have backup parts.) From everything I can see in the video, it is identical to the SC430 changer.

Attached is the service manual for the radio. On page 2, it describes how to put the radio in SHIP MODE. On page 85, it explains how to disassemble the tray assembly.

I was going to extract the pages, but figured more people would get more use out of the entire manual.

Or you can use the service manual that Retroplay just put out there for us and use the part number listed there on page 8 & 9 and order it from Pioneer (or some radio parts vendor, maybe even ebay).

Thanks Retroplay

I looked and didn't see the particular springs in the parts list. They are part of item #77

Those four springs you see in the diagram are shock springs for entire mechanism.

NM: Geez.... I was looking at the wrong page. Ignore me

AH HA! I had one of those cars and I couldn't get the stupid CD changer to work either.

If you go this route, you are better off looking for a radio from a Lincoln LS. The Lincoln LS is a sister car to the Thunderbird, like the Lexus LS is a sister car to the SC. Not all the parts are the same, but may of them are.
