Unless it came on earlier than that and you just didn't notice it. I've had that happen to me before. I'd be driving along and notice that the light was on and had to wonder just when did that come on?

I was city driving and saw the light popped up. After driving 6 miles, the car started to slow down, and pressing on the gas, it didn't move so i had to pull to the gas station. I'm the 2nd owner, and the car was in a front collision twice.

I gather that filling up the tank with gas resolved the non-running issue, right?
Also, how many miles did the trip computer (on the A/C display) indicate that you had left?

The light went on only once since I've owned the car, and the next gas station was 20 miles away. I usually look to fill up no later than at the 1/4 tank mark.
I'd be concerned as to what kinda stuff you're sucking out when you get down that low. I was even thinking recently about running the tank down very low and using a pump to suck out as much as I could in order to do a poor man's tank cleaning. Not sure if it would do any good. Any ideas?

2JCDZ, I would probably recommend throwing in some Fuel/Injector/Additive Cleaner (or Seafoam) before your next fill up (when the tank is near empty- shoot for 1/8 tank left). Maybe as your tank was getting low you were getting bad mixed fuel or remnant "stuff" (like LexMan's post mentions above) into your engine which would cause some symptoms you were getting, like misfiring or delayed detonation.

Since the fuel pumps are mounted in the tank. I keep at least 1/4 tank of gas in with this summer heat, to keep the pump cool. Not sure if it help but it can't hurt.

Shawn, that's a very good rule of thumb to go by. IIRC, both our Mazdas and our Honda in previous years got 20 mpg or better and the trip point was still 3 gallons (60 to 90 miles). However, going by your Dad's rule of thumb, one would never run out of gas in Hondas or Mazdas either.

I don't pay a lot of attention to the light as I have the trip computer set to display how many miles I have left. When it says 40 miles, it takes about 14.5 gallons to fill it. That means 3.5 gallons left, or 75 miles. I don't want to press my luck any further than that.

Fuel pumps always pick up from the bottom, so whatever is at the bottom of the tank gets pumped up first. E.g. if water gets in the tank, symptoms should show up immediately.
The 'Range' reading on this car is only a reading of the level of fuel. No matter how I drive, a full tank will read 5xx km, but after 300 km it still reads 3xx km and the fuel gauge reads about 60%. On most cars, 'range' will change as average mpg changes; some cars calculate the last 50 km or so. This car doesn't, so 0 is really just the lowest point the sensor can go.
