Hmm, maybe I need to change mine also. There is a little bit of smoke on start up and it does stink.

The pcv system is one of the most overlooked by the car care community. A proper functioning one is more important than most realize. The sc uses a spring loaded type. Just because it rattles doesn't mean it's ok. The spring can be broken and still rattle. If it doesn't rattle it means it's stuck, or plugged. If a hose is cracked or loose, you are allowing unmetered, unfiltered air in the engine. A pcv system not operating correctly can cause any of the following problems. Excessive oil consumption, oil drawn into the clean side of the system, accelerated oil contamination, high crankcase pressure. Many have run the crankcase dry of oil, because they didn't realize oil was being sucked up into the intake from a broken pcv system. Blown seals, contamination of catalytic converters. Not worth it over a $8 part. Stuck open or closed it it's just a different set of issues.
Many by new cars don't use spring loaded valves anymore. They use oil separators, or fixed orifice valve. This doesn't mean no maintenance though. You still need to inspect, clean or replace them.

Is the SC PCV a Lexus only type part or are there generic PCVs available for it?

One of the reasons I looked at the PCV was because I couldn't find anyone complaining of worn valve seals or valve guides. One note is there are two different styles of PCV on our engines. I believe from 2002-2004, they used a plug in PCV, but either in 2005 or 2006 they changed to a threaded PCV. The first one I picked up at O'Reillys was the wrong one. You may want to check the box before going home. If I had it would have saved me a trip back to exchange.

I changed the PCV in my 2002 soon after I purchased. It was one of the many Maintenance items On my list.
I recall reading a thread about the PCV valve becoming threaded.

The stuck open pcv valve is allowing oil to be pulled into the intake. When you shut the engine off that oil on in the intake runners pools up on the back of the valves. Kind of like a nearly empty bottle of ketchup turn upside down. It didn't look like much was in there, but after it all pools up it's a fair amount. That's why so much smoke on startup. The smoke after its warm is less because one there's not as much all at once. So you get the symptoms of valve seals. Anytime your burning excessive oil. the pcv valve should be one of the first things to check.
Obviously pogman had a fair amount either or pooled still in low spots of the intake, and or the exhaust.
I too thought after he replaced the pcv without improvement, that it was the valve seals.

With all that oil burning, I suggest the OP run Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam in his crankcase to clean up the residue left on the rings.
I wouldn't have diagnosed valve seals on a Lexus V8 engine, with 90K miles, which had been "meticulously maintained." It just doesn't happen, and thus, is why I own two, and would have more if my wife would let me!
