Default Used car value on SC430 going up ??

I just received my latest DMV renewal for my 2002 SC430 . I was surprised to see the cost of renewal jump up higher than previous years . Its $181 for this year .. Versus $128 for last year . I double checked all my renewals for the last 5 years and the value has consistently going down until this year ...
Is this because the value of SC430 is going up this year ?

Sorry...Not in California. The reason your renewal cost is substantially higher is the tax increase passed by the democratically controlled legislature and signed by the governor.
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/wcm/co...df?MOD=AJPERES. $50 increase for most of our cars. Oh, BTW, this does not include the increase in gas tax ALSO passed.

The good news, there is a citizen’s initiative to repeal the increase in the works. They are gathering signatures now.

In CA, registration cost is based on the value of the vehicle??

You are partially correct. There are several components to the fee.
In California DMV fees are based on the following:
Fees are due upon original registration/renewal based on:
  • Vehicle type (auto, motorcycle, etc.).
  • Purchase price or declared value.
  • Dates (date purchased, date vehicle entered California, etc.).
  • Owner's residence county/city or business address, if a business.
  • Unladen or declared gross vehicle weight (GVW)/number of axles.
  • Special license plates.
  • Unpaid parking violation/toll evasion bail.
The registration fee ($58, includes $3 for Alternative Fuel/Technology Registration fee), California Highway Patrol (CHP) fee ($25), vehicle license fee (VLF), and county/district fees are due for most vehicles registered for on-highway use. Registration and CHP fees are used by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and CHP to offset costs. Commercial Vehicle Registration Act (CVRA) and/or weight fees may be due for commercial vehicles.

Unfortunately for all Californians those fees just went up $50 for most cars, more for cars valued higher.

WOW as much as I like visiting CA. I am sure glad I don't live there. I just paid $134.00 for three years registration here in Virginia.

Just looked on ebay and noticed sc430 at 14-15k. It does appear prices have steadied and started to slowly increase.
This may be the last year one can find it for 10k or less as the car has been out of production for nearly a decade.

At the risk of stating the obvious, for these cars condition and mileage is going to be a huge determinant in market value/selling price going forward. Despite what they initially cost, more than a few of these cars have been poorly maintained, been trashed inside and out, driven 150-200k+ miles, ,,,or all three.

Pristine condition, well maintained, low mile examples are increasingly rare although they are still out there to be had, and in the future are going to sell for a significant premium (assuming the owners understand that value and have the patience to price thier car accordingly).

I paid $21K for a mint 2004 SC white with saddle with 27K miles on it in mid 2016. The Lexus guys that have seen it say they have never seen a nicer condition interior. I probably paid $5k over average market value for my car but was happy to do so since I'd been looking for a super clean low mile car for $20K for nearly a year. btw - the seller was being flooded with calls to see the car when I bought it 4 hours after he put it up for sale.

It has 30k miles on it now (with added backup camera, new TB/WP, spare tire kit, and new Michelin Pilots A/S) and would not consider selling it for less than I paid. If no takers, lots of room in my garage, and more importantly it is very likely never leaving : )

Lol. spoken like a true Texan! I am from Dallas and Iremember the weathy lady in Houston who was buried in her favorite nightgown in her Ferrari. I think she started a trend for a while. A great sense of humor will keep us going for a long time yet!

The listed price is not always the selling price. I passed after a dealer was willing to drop the price by $4000 a few days ago.

Looks like I will be doing the same as you bro.. I got a mint 2002 SC430 with only 24K miles . Always in California ,, no danger of flooding ( Even though we have the fires here in SO CAL ) ..
