Default valve cover gasket repair, 2002 sc430?

Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well. I had a small question regarding "Valve Cover Gasket" repair.

My car recently had ignition coil #1 replaced. It just failed on the coldest day here in NJ, car was shaking/rough and is now fine. $140 expensive repair. Now I have to get a valve cover gasket fixed and my mechanic quoted me at $480 -
Does this sound reasonable? I thrust him but just wanna make sure. Last time I got an oil change, the service mechanic said $140 charge for an ignition coil was too expensive. I have 153, 400 miles I think. Any info will be appreciated.

Kind regards, Marvin (This car is so much fun!!!)

Does not sound unreasonable. Your coil job was fair too. The coil part was around $95.
Gaskets and seals will parrish over time. I’m assuming from your post only one valve cover and four coil, sometimes called spark plug tube, seals. Or is it both covers?
If it’s the driver’s side, it is a little more labor intensive than the passenger side. The expense here is nearly all labor rather than parts.

What about spark plugs, have they been replaced or at least inspected? Iridium spark plugs are about $9 each. But if the coil seal(s)are worn oil may have gathered in the the plug well/tube(s).

Hello VBTbob, thanks for reply. Well, just got it back. He changed both sides/2 valve cover gaskets, 2 spark plugs, cleaned and said it should be better now. He said it's most the labor since he had it most of the day.

My other friend is a mechanic but did not have time to do it, but did said it was pricey, like $100 more. He sent me a link with $189-$297 But I honestly don't know, since it could be for just one side.

He did both. I thrust him, it's just that I thought it was an easy thing to do.

Actually if it was both sides, then IMO it was a great price considering labor costs today.

i did mine recently along with the plugs. It was not that difficult if you turn wrenches. If you don’t work on cars then it is better to pay a mechanic.

oh wow. BgW, I think I will start doing things on my own. Only problem, I live in North NJ, it's cold here so I only have a limited time to do these things plus I don't have a garage. I'll look up and save the info thank you.

I now think it was ok, since he did both. The initial shock made me second guest, but I rather be expensive if it's gonna keep the car safe. I love this vehicle, people are curious at work at what it is. Thanks for your insight.

My now independent mechanic, previously 17 years as a Lexus dealership tech, says $275.
