I have a 2002 SC430 with 71,000 on the clock. It started having a gas/exhaust smell in the garage last fall. With winter storage, I hoped that the smell would dissipate, however, it is still present and annoying. Brought it to a reputable local mechanic and thorough visual inspection did not find and liquid leaks in either the engine compartment or at the gas tank. Any ideas? As the wife has given the ultimatum of clean it up get it out.
Can you be a little more specific;
When is it smelled?
All the time?
At starting?
You said in the garage. You smell both gasoline and exhaust fumes?
Inside and outside the car?
Gasoline and exhaust fumes odors are quite different smells. For example did the mechanic pull out the rear seat because that’s where you’d inspect the seals on the gas tank fuel pump and float mechanism, a rare problem. Whereas exhaust means getting under the car to look over headers and pipes to the tail.
Or part of the Evap system in the engine bay.
Any work done on the car prior to the “smell” beginning?
The car has been in storage, is this critter country? Rats/Mice?
We need more specific info to help zero in it.

if you are smelling raw gas you need to open the garage and with the help of the wife, start sniffing around areas where the gasoline is located.
Inside the car...windows up.
the gas cap
the engine compartment
Bob is correct when he mentioned the difference between gas and exhaust fumes...which is it?
Darryl also had a good point...do you have a lawn mower or gas can in there too?
Also NEVER try an squeeze in another half or full gallon when filling up. You risk damaging/saturating the EVAP charcoal canister which could be the source of the gasoline odor.
If his is like mine, it smells on start up but cleans up after running for a while. Both of our '02 cars do that. I replaced my PCV with the hope that it was dirty causing problems but it didn't help much, if any at all.
Yeah, I'm sure that it is just artifacts of what is required to start a car, I just don't know what causes that, or if that is true of even new cars. It would be nice to get rid of it though.

Thank you for all comments, especially this one. To be more specific.
1. It is gas smell
2. It is from the SC
Are there any pics of what it looks like with the rear seat removed?
