The AM radio is never very good amplitude modulation. Where as FM is frequency modulation. The FM wave length requires a different type of antenna and its quality is always better then am. The clicking you may be hearing is mostly attributed to FM I believe its called clipping. When your driving the signal may bounce and cause this noise. Am in my sc430 fades in and out and its sound is not very good at all. In the design of the FM radio in our cars the antenna height is automatically changed as you tune to different frequency. I believe they call it quarter wave length. I am trying to remember all of the above from years past . I may have some of it correct and also some may not. Others can chime in

do you think it could be his antenna having a problem when it attempts to make a physical change in length for the wave length change?

more good questions would be if the radio was ever removed or if the windshield was ever replaced...
