The entire unit ( ABS accumulator) these days even OEM is not as much as it was 5 years ago so that is good news . Think a brand new unit is about $-1,300 vs about $2,500 a few years ago parts. With Labor today you might be looking at $1,500 -$1,600
The Q is are you willing to wait till it completely fails when you are going down a hill on the freeway at 80 mph an hour?
This is the gold pump or accumulator attached to the MC that loses pressure over time . But if you want to play it safe, get the entire unit which is the ABS MC . They were $2,500 a few years ago and now about $1,200 for the entire unit. If you are handy and can installed, not a bad idea. As soon as my SC hits over 70-75K, I’m just going to replace for my 02.
There are four parts to the system, The reservoir, the accumulator, the pump and the motor. The motor drives the pump and transfers fluid from the reservoir to the accumulator. It has been stated several places, in this thread, that the problem is the MOTOR when the brushes wear down the commutator of the motor and then the motor stops as on a failed starter motor (though on these it is usually the brushes that wear). If this happens then, yes, the accumulator pressure will drop. BUT, it is still the MOTOR that is at fault, not the accumulator.
wow, Jim if this is the case this is really good news if replacing the motor is all that is needed with the Pump leak issue . Not sure how you would take the entire assembly apart to get to the motor though.
If you ever end up tackling the motor, do let everyone know if this is the solution
I have thought about buying that motor and putting it on the shelf till I need it. My SC has 187,000 miles on it and its going fine so I wont be pulling it off just to see. I hope that insurance will just make it NOT happen.....LOL
Since I’ve been here at this forum, there were three incidents of total brake failure to the SC.
First, happened to MJN331 on 07/12/2018, then happened to DBryan on 12/31/2020 and now happened to GarbrrilleG, yesterday. Prior to 2015, it happened to Omala on 07/15/2011.
The real danger is it’s happened with no or very little warning. That’s scary.
@DshngDaryl
Please file a complaint on NHTSA.gov I filed a complaint and mine is the only one regarding brake failure. The advice about what to do when the brakes fail while driving are great but what do you do if it doesn't work when you just go into reverse? Or when you put it in drive from a parked position? It sounds like it has happened many times but no one has complained to Lexus or NHTSA to get a recall going.

I would like a definition of "total brake failure" and a definition of "little or no warning". It is my contention that this has NEVER EVER happened but is only in the definition of those two phrases.
I'm pretty sure its just the power brakes that go out, brakes will still work the old fashioned way. If there were actually no brakes, there would be more reported accidents from slamming into something
