Default How Hard Is It To Remove passenger side outside mirror?

How hard is it to remove and replace the passenger side outside mirror? Just the glass. My Mirror on the passenger side is dis-colored, it has in areas on the mirror that sheen like you drop a drop of oil in water. It looks like the front edge (closest to the passenger) of the outside mirror comes off? Like it would just pop off using a dash tool?

Thoughts

Quite a few mirror threads. This one, https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc4...de-mirror.html should help on the anatomy of the mirror.

This is one to take it apart: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc4...r-removal.html

I've got an '04. Replaced one of my mirrors (just the glass) a few years ago. I do not recall it being complicated...seems to me the old glass just pops off and the new one presses on. But, I do remember thinking the old glass was going to break before it released. Good luck.

As 2004SC said, you can just replace the mirror
Amazon Amazon

If you want a SUPER easy job, this company advocates you place their mirror directly over your old mirror
Amazon Amazon

Of course we both know easy isn't always the best

i purchased these mirrors but returned them because at the time of purchase, I didn’t realize they didn’t have the heating element on the back of the mirror.
if you don’t mind non-heated mirrors, these are a great deal.

i did the second one on my BMW. The LCD made a large spot in the middle. Over about three years it was still there and just like the day I applied it. The down side, like bgw said no more heated mirror. In this case no more auto dimming. It didn't matter to me in this case. We only drove it when we could put the top down, and almost never drove it at night. It can be an acceptable method in some cases.

Ok if I have done my homework and thanks again Bob for the links the only part I want to replace is the glass itself. I believe that the part number for just the glass alone is 87931-24170 which is for the passenger side mirror. And if I am reading this right this is only the glass not any motors, gears etc. If I read some of the posts in the links Bob provided correctly you can take the outside covers (front & rear) off the mirror unhook the 2 short wires separate the glass portion from the gear/motor section and replace? So I just want/need to replace the glass nothing else. So I believe that the correct part is 87931-24170. It is not cheap so could someone who may have already done this please confirm the part number for me. 2006 SC

If it’s just the glass, I’d pick up a used passenger (right) mirror assembly on eBay and cannibalize the mirror glass from it. A lot less expensive than the part you listed.

Good point Bob. But is this the right part number?

With a part that expensive, the best way to determine that would direct communication with a dealer parts manger, not the counter guy or gal. To be honest I’m not sure Lexus sells just the glass with the heating element. The exploded parts diagram of the outside mirror assembly makes it difficult to tell.

Yes I know. But I believe that part number is just for glass. I have taken your advise and have a bid out on a 2006 SC 430 Passenger (right) side mirror.

Thanks

Ok..this way you can practice taking the mirror apart from the housing and you’ll have some spare parts in case a motor fails.

Update:

Won the auction on a 2006 SC 430 passenger side mirror in excellent condition for $45.00 plus $9.83 shipping so out the door for $54.83 so now I have something to play with.

Wow, that was a boatload of cash LESS than the mirror only part option from Lexus. And, you have a practice device with spare parts.
